Accident/TechVest??????????

Have ridden with a a Tek-vest for 4 years now. It's the hard type and I love it. Helps keep me from slouching. Also keeps me warmer at 0 or -0. I don't know that I have it on. Took a short cruse [10 miles] the other day without it and felt naked. Rev

Exactly how I feel. Slouching, warmer and about feeling naked. Not comfortable riding without it. Like my headphones...

If the injury was indeed a torn aorta, based on my training I don't think a vest would have made a difference. That sort of trauma is from sudden deceleration and not impact. So unless the vest somehow slows the deceleration....but please keep in mind my training was as a paramedic, not a doctor or accident reconstructionist so I'm just making an educated guesstimate here. At any rate, it's tragic.

Sklar, I can remember when that happened. If I am correct, it was a Yammy??? As my wife, a nurse, and I were told of how the accident happened, we could not believe anybody was not killed outright. Very fortunate you were. I think someone was looking out for you?????

Yep, 2001 Yamaha SX700R. I was very lucky, could have ended way worse. Sled was totaled, but, I bought a mid release 05 Renegade that afternoon, and finished riding for the weekend. :)

You need to be careful, as your UP mom thinks a lot of you!!! You had a Renegade when I met you. Your brother also??? Not sure, been a while back.

no way for the 661, might as well ride without a vest....spend the extra money and get a techvest. may be a little uncomfortable at first, then you get used to it and wont ride without it....kinda like a seatbelt when the laws were made.

not sure what u mean..r u saying the 661 isnt enuf protection?

I use the Demon Hypervest.

Don~

Took a quick look at the Demon, looks like a good option and prices look reasonable as well.

I currently use a Tekvest and no complaints but always good to see other options.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in regards to any protective vests is how long are they considered safe to use, if not subject to any impacts or damage?

For the old abe's question on would a TekVest (any protective vest) have helped in the accident, hard to say but like using a helmet, any protective gear is better than none.

After all the positive reviews on this model I tried this one on last season and just couldn't get comfortable. The front length for me just wasn't quite right as it either needed to be longer or shorter due to it riding up when sitting down. I do have a little bit of a gut so it should be fine for a slender person.

I was just looking at the 661 core protector online and was wondering for the guys who have them what height/weight you are vs the size you bought? And do you guys wear this model over skin or after 1st or second base layer?

Put it this way, for the kind of riding I do, I don't think it's enough protection. For a trail rider looking for a bit of piece of mind, I think it's a good option. JMO!

POLARISDAN thanks for the sizing info. I'm the same size height, and weight.

I wear 661 core protector with spine protection over second or third layer which has been my turtle neck this year. Then I wrap my back thing around the stock belt then my bibs go on top of 661 then my jacket final layer. The 661 core protector with spine protection has a side entry zipper but I never use that just pull over my head and stays on all day. The beauty of the 661 it has a breathable spandex type material that moves with you and conforms to many bodies. I'm 5'11" 210lbs and all my shirts are 2XL so easy to know I needed XXL sizing plus I knew the 661 core protector with spine protection sizing runs on the small side. Indy 500 is correct if you are bouncing off trees daily then buy something else. The 661 core protector with spine protection is for the trail riders seeking comfort and protection from flying limbs, branches and the airborn stud or rock your bud kicks up. It will help with the low speed offs that just happen for chest & spinal cord + frontal organs. The all plastic vests were not for me kept riding up into my arm pits and caused chaffing. I don't feel the 661 at all and I'm a big mile rider. I might tighten the back thing after lunch but that's it. 661 also nice for guys who put on and take off weight still fit me at 227lbs but this year back to 210. I hope this helps.

WD, you just confused me. Now I have to ask, how do most people wear their vest, under the bibs, or over the bibs??? What is the most comfortable??? I hope we get some thoughts here on the over/under bibs. POLARISDAN??? Anyone have a Klim vest, witch is the same as a TekVest "FreeStyle"? Do they breathe very well?

My preference is under my bibs. Why would I a wear 661 over bibs and lose access to my pockets iPhone keys and everything else I store in bibs plus the 661 has a stock belt and I wrap my back thing around the 661 to protect kidneys. Idk up to you to wear protection any way want but this is how I have been doing it for 10 years. Jmo Abe but you seem to be over thinking the issue... you will make vest work for you and up to you.

Over thinking/analysis you are right. That is a fault of mine!!! But trying vests before in the wrong way is possibly why I was not comfortable. Many good ideas, or likes on here is a real help to maybe get it right this time around. I appreciate all of your thoughts. Front zipper, side entry, or over your head. many ways to go.
