Lambeau Flyover this Sunday

I've been to a number of games that have featured Flyovers at Lambeau and have wondered how they time it to happen right when the National Anthem ends, almost immediately. Well, I found out that they transmit the vocals up to the planes that are cruising a couple of miles out and at the precise time they bank and burn, arriving over Lambeau on the last note of the anthem. In the case of F-18's, the sound has been compared to a loud clap of thunder or a stick of dynamite at arm's length. It's quite an experience and a brief example of the power and skill of the U.S. military. Here's the story that is running in today's Press Gazette...

GREEN BAY - The flyover before Sunday's Green Bay Packers game will likely be a tad louder than usual.

The event will involve four F-18 fighter jets based on the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, said Tom Miller, Brown County's airport director.

The jets are scheduled to arrive in Brown County sometime Saturday afternoon. Their arrival at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport will be announced on the airport's Twitter account, @GRBAirport, Miller said.

He said the planes will take off from the airport 30 to 45 minutes before the 3:40 p.m. kickoff of the Packers game with the New York Giants. They'll stage over the Suamico area before screaming over Lambeau Field following the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

After the flyover, the jets will return to the airport so that the pilots can be driven to Lambeau and introduced to the crowd during the game.

As always, Sunday's flyover won't happen if the weather is bad, or if visibility is limited.

Previous Lambeau flyovers have included a variety of military aircraft, including helicopters.

That will be cool! I will try to watch. I'm guessing it will be even louder than normal due to the very cold air.

It's neat to see and all, but what a waste of money. Who pays for something like this? I hope its not the public. The NFL teams should have to pay the bill.

My buddy and I were walking up the south façade of lambeau field on a beautiful clear fall day getting to our seats. We couldn't see anything or hear anything all of a sudden there are these two fighter jets racing at mach 10 directly above us. never saw them and then bam! made the hair on my back stand up. we stood there and watched them fade into the sky as they flew away. love the fly overs.

I'd imagine these are Navy F-18's given they are assigned to the USS Nimitz. Should be a sight to behold. On 6/2/16, the Blue Angels lost Marine Capt Jeff Kuss (number 6-opposing solo) in Smyrna TN, when his F/A-18 contacted tree's out of a Split-S roll practicing for an airshow, and he punched out too late. Parachute was engulfed in the fireball, and he died of blunt force trauma. I saw them practice in April in Pensacola, and wife got pic taken with the Number 1 lead pilot.

When we were at Lambeau this yr for the Detroit game we did the tour the day before and the guide explained the same thing about the flyovers. They have a person at the stadium also in contact with the jets. They told us what direction they'd be coming from so the next day during the game as the anthem was nearing its end we were looking in that direction and could see them coming and it was awesome when they went over. I believe we had F-16's from Madison for our game.

I think it was last yr at the Duluth Sno Cross they had a fly over from an F16 from the Duluth base.

I feel your pain jeb but I'm sure that you and I and every other John Dee member are paying in some way or another. If it's any consolation these guys are going to be up there flying anyway, you know, practicing to go after the bad guys, so why not get some good P.R. for the Navy.

My wife and I were on the top this year for the Pack Vs Cowboys when the Harrier's (I think that's what they were) did the fly over. We were watching them prepare for about 10 minutes miles away, awesome how those things just hover and not really move. I myself was wondering what something like that cost, I bet it makes a few kids in the crowd think about joining.

A waste of money? No way! gary_in_neenah got it.

It's all in the "training" budget (They need to log a significant number flight hours on a regular basis anyway for compliance with currency, training requirements and combat readiness. Many of the precision skills employed are directly transferable to operational situations.) And as in the case of the flight demonstration teams (Blue Angels, etc.) it's also the "recruiting" budget.

Yes, it's a very effective recruiting tool.

True statement by Elf. I have spoke to one of the pilots that I know in passing, to whom is based here in Madison, in which this was the exact description he gave me to how it works. It really got my curiosity to ask him when I experienced the flyover at the Badger/LSU game. He said they try their best to be on cue and they can speed up slow down a bit but there is not a lot of room to make up time but they do the best they can. He also mentioned that the flyovers just as much of an honor for them as it is to us. I don't mind as a tax payer to flip the bill......USA, USA, USA!

U are already flipping the bill for them and there pilots and the ground crew .may as well get to see them from time to time . it may just inspire 1 or 2 kids in the stand to join

Flyovers are cool, cooler to see the plane up close 20160923_132337.jpg . Always helps to have a brother in the navy.

I parked all four F18s today around 12:30 at Executive Air

We have the military fuel contract

We will fuel them in the morning , and hope all four will fire with the cold on battery power

They stopped for fuel in Denver on the way and stated they where having battery issues with the cold weather in Denver

Then it's time to hook up the GPU and see what happens

Regardless

I was told all four will fire up tomorrow afternoon , but only two are actually doing the flyover straight from the pilots

If anything changes I can try to post tomorrow during my busy schedule

You can see my guys and myself running around on the ramp for the Air Force F - 22 s when they did the flyover a few years back on YouTube
Now that was entertaining and bitter bitter cold

Weather was fine this morning until the wind kicked in of course before the F - 18s landed

I will try to post some pictures tomorrow of what my ramp will look like with a 100 Business Jets and 4 F - 18 s

Thanks for posting bee, we're going to need some pictures after Sunday. And good luck parking those Corporate Jets and keeping everyone happy i.e. "we need to be the first ones out", been there and done that.
