I this system seems to be getting worse. I figured they would work out some bugs after last year. ...
last yr I went to same gas station I buy at every yr for the last 25yrs and got a sticker then and there . now I have a crinkled up receipt.
on the plus side I have yet to see a cop or dnr on the trail or on a road where I ride in wi in my life so not to concerned if I never get it at least I tried.
total joke only a life long government worker could screw something so simple up as printing a pass at a gas station. **** the printer is still there they still use it for other passes

By reading this below from the WI DNR, I was thinking you could still buy trail pass stickers in person at a "sales agent" locations. I have always done this in the past. Don't want to buy one on-line in advance given the iffy snow and trips being cancelled, etc. So you guys are saying you can't buy a pass sticker from the gas stations that used the sell them any longer but only get a paper receipt at these locations? Hopefully if we do this, the paper receipt will be sufficient if checked by the DNR.

Nonresident snowmobile trail pass ($50) – for a snowmobile registered in or in the process of being registered in another state, province or country. Available online, or at sales agent. All Wisconsin snowmobile trail passes will be shipped by US Mail within 2 business days to the address specified. A temporary trail use receipt is issued to operate legally on snowmobile trails. Carry the receipt with you until your pass is delivered by the U.S. Mail and affixed to your snowmobile’s windshield.

Wow!

They have figured out a way to destroy their customer base. Too bad, it was nice to buy a permit when snow was good.
Early season low snow is not an issue now. Just staying out of the state for the winter.

That is correct. AT gas stations you get paper receipt, you can ride legally with the paper for 3 weeks. Sticker will come in mail. Only problem is, DNR now has 'cause' to stop you to check to see IF you have paper in your pocket. I will get my sticker by mail AFTER I am already back home from my trip & never even put it on a sled. TOTAL WASTE of money & resources. Or maybe I will sell it to someone else going up later in year??

What the h^^L was wrong with gas stations giving out stickers? It is all done on-line anyway so the DNR still has your personal info. And like others have said, they still have sticker printer in the store.

I must be a cheap *** because all I can think of when they send this stupid stuff in the mail is the envelope/ postage cost and the person stuffing the envelopes wage. They could make the trail pass come out of a gumball machine.

Ordered on Sunday got on Wednesday. Been ordering for past 3 seasons online. Never an issue. Same goes with Michigan. Plan ahead and make sure all information is correct

In Illinois when you get a new license they give you a print out receipt. Don't get license for 3-4 weeks

I know it's not that dig of a deal to order but they already had the printers in place and were doing it before so it seems as if they made the process more difficult than it had to be. I will be curious to find out at the end of the season if they feel it affected sales.

but why? the system has been in place to buy a sticker at a brick and mortar store in WI for decades . in fact the machine is still used for other permits in those same stores. why the extra cost and step . and why is every retailer having to explain it is not there fault 500 times a season . more Administration cost is just the top of why this cluster is so crazy. but then it is government and they want us all to remember how inept at decision making they really are at every turn .just a mid season reminder to renew your car tabs on line so u don't have to go in and deal with theses people in person the day before u expire lol.
BTW all u guys still waiting U are screwed and your stuff is prob lost . I did the in store deal last sat morning and got my sticker today sat. so a week

The whole separate sticker deal has kept the part timers sleds sitting in the sheds unregistered with no stickers. I know of several. When S WI had trails open before X mas I got a text from a buddy with an old sled that said, we need trail stickers Now? His sled was on Craigslist the following day. I know we needed more funding but the sticker with no snow is pushing people away.

This was my exact point at a couple of our meetings when cap step was being discussed..
.Prior to cap step, a casual rider could buy a sled and have it transfered and riding an hour later.

My replacement came today.

Non-resident, full price passes SHOULD be made available at the usual places. You can't cheat those. Discounted club and resident passes I can see being more closely monitored so that people aren't buying passes at discount rates and supplying others that may not be eligible. Actually, once you buy a trail pass for a registered sled, you cannot buy another one for the same sled. I tried. Not sure what happens if you bust up your hood or windshield and lose your trail pass.

Just thought I would clarify we have been active club members in Wisconsin for the last 20 plus years, it got to be a back and forth deal between the awsc and dnr, possibly one bad experience, but seemed it could have been resolved in a simple manner, just hope the next time works better.

I always went to the DNR office at the state house to get my sleds registered here in Indiana. I guess I was lucky I was close enough to do that. Never was too big a deal. Now You can go to any license branch and register them the 1st time. After that as long as it isn't expired it can be done online like any plate. Easy. Not sure about the road stuff. It is legal to ride any road here in Boone county including the city streets as long as there is 3" of snow or more. But You do have to be a licensed driver to do that.

everyone should have know about ordering ahead of time.. I belong to a club right on the border. went to Ace in twin lakes, wis. on a saturday -- got them on a wednesday, not even a whole week .. no complaints.. Not worth getting bent out of shape.. I know first hand how much work goes into maintaining trails.. Now if it would only snow..

it has absolutely nothing to do with the work that clubs put in to trails .
it has everything to do with government screwing up what was at 1 time a extremely ez transaction. They can very EZ let clubs sell passes and also let gas statins print passes.
they are wasting on the clock man hours not to mention postage and for what?
and why should any one know not from WI or even in WI they will not get a over the counter sticker ?
I am pretty involved in MN clubs and knew of there club sales deal but had no idea about no over the counter sticker sales. why would I or the 5 people asking same questions as me in line .
I really don't care nor am I really shocked just a bone head move wasting time and resources that could be used other places

This is still the case.

Except you won't have an official trail pass sticker on your sled. That gives the LEO and DNR cause to stop you. I think that along with as ezra posted....a waste of time and resources in administering the new system, is what is bugging folks.
AND they ARE checking for stickers everywhere...in 350 miles this season, I was already stopped once and have rolled by 3 different places where sheriffs were watching sled traffic. The time I was pulled over by 2 sheriffs on sleds it was at night and was told theycouldn't see my registration and TP.....I was in full compliance sticker wise....even made me pull out the wallet and show reg. cards.

We definitely stepped backwards in WI

Way too many hoops to jump thru with new Wis. system for out of state riders. No more quick trips to ride there on the spur of the moment. Snow conditions in the last few years don't make it possible to plan ahead. There surly had to be a more simple method to achieve the results wanted. It was nice to stop at a vendor, pick up the trail pass, and ride.

Cap Step had a Setting Sun trial of 3 years, I believe, we are in year 2. You don't like the program take your thoughts to the WI state elected officals for change. Cap Step is NOT etched in stone YET.
