Fat Tire Bikes...Anybody having issues with them?

We encountered a Fat tire bike rider, on the Hiawatha trail (railroad grade north of Tomahawk) on Sunday.....the guy had the proper clothing, and lighting per Wisconsin state law...he was wearing a reflective shirt with big letters on it that said "you must give me 3 feet"....I stayed behind him for over a half mile...he stayed in the middle of the trail, and would not yield to let me pass....5 mph....I finally got around him...but he refused to move. I found out later he has done this to several other riders...so I called the DNR...turns out..they don't have any jurisdiction on that trail...it's county, and local municipality only...according to the county forestry coordinator..no fat tire bikes are allowed on Lincoln County snowmobile trails...However...the railroad grade is a "gray area".....it is currently being addressed with the snowmobile club...Turns out there have been several complaints about this guy...he hates snowmobiles, and atvs, and in fact his family was involved with the closing of a snowmobile trail in this area...he has told several people that he wants these trails turned into silent sport only areas.

For right now there is nothing we can do about it...so keep your eyes open....Even though he is supposed to yield to snowmobiles...he will not...so if you encounter him...give him a wide birth, and get around him when you safely can.
DO NOT ENGAGE him...he is a retired state patrol employee, from Madison and is BAT POOP CRAZY!!! ( More and more of these granola eating tree huggers are moving north...smh)..I do encourage you to call the sherriff's department if you have an issue with him...they are aware of this guy, as he has created problems with other folks, on other issues (usually involving motorcycles, and ATVs)

I'm all for sharing the trails...but this guy makes it hard....common sense and courtesy go along way....this guy is a hazard, and will end up getting somebody or himself hurt or worse.

I just wondered if anybody else has encountered this??

To bad someone with a Go Pro couldn't of taped him and his actions. I mean slow as you should, giving him space. But at the same time recording the speed that your traveling and time that it takes to safely pass. Could come in handy later down the road.

I love riding the fat bike, but there is a time and a place! Riding groomed snowmobile trails on a fat bike is about as much fun as riding down a plowed road on a snowmobile. This guys agenda is ridiculous, and someone is like to get hurt due to his antics...

What are you talking about?? This is not an area known to hate snowmobilers....in fact I'd say it's a very snowmobiling friendly area...we have some local peckerwoods (just like a lot of other areas), and ONE fat tire bike rider causing issues.....my main reason for posting this is SAFETY...so riders who don't know are aware....don't turn this into a "hardcore sledder" type garbage post!! That's not why I posted it.

The Law clearly needs to deal with this POS. That's the only method that can deal with these type idiots. Use your head around him, as he could be carrying.

He is extra agitated since Trump was elected ..I expect his behavior to get worse after inauguration....or until Mary Burke runs for governor again..

I am a very avid mountain biker, fat biker and trail steward for my single track bike trail. I tell every biker I know to stay off the snowmobile trails. First off it's dangerous, no comparison in the speeds traveled. The biker doesn't stand a chance. But secondly the snowmobilers organized and got the networks of snowmobile trails established. The bikers have their own designated areas they have organized and they don't want other sporting folks on theirs either. Just common sense.

This guy is obviously giving a bad name to the fat bikers. Not all of us are tree hugging, blah blahs..... No use establishing stereotypes here but I don't agree what he is doing.

I've seen fat bikers at night on the groomed trails in Marquette (another known snowmobile unfriendly area). As an avid biker myself, with countless other trails they could be on, I've always thought there could be no other reason for them to be on the trail other than to agitate. I guess some people don't have anything better to do.

Some people just don't get it. As said I am the trail steward for doing trail work and monitoring trail conditions and controlling our park gate at one of the Mpls/St.Paul major singletrack trails. I have issues all the time there with people that choose to ride the trails when our gates are closed and too muddy. We have gates, signs and a website with current conditions but they still feel they are entitled. Our park also has a designated horseback riding only trail loop. There is no bikes or anything else allowed there and it's well marked. Some idiot went in there this past fall on their mountain bike and spooked a lady's horse and she fell off and broke her hip. It's no different than a sledder riding off trail just off the designated snowmobile trails on private property so the landowner eventually says no to the trail system through his land. Only takes a small few to ruin it for all.

I would recommend being careful with this guy, it was mentioned above that he is a retired Law Enforcement Officer. Remember he can legally carry a firearm and to engage him may be deadly for someone, especially if he is not all together upstairs. As for the Trump comment, I find it hard to believe he is upset that he won, most Police backed him 1000%. I for one did.
