I have noticed that there is always a snow storm right before MLK weekend, and then it always thaws right after. Seems to have been the trend for at least the past 5-6 years.

I know what you are saying been living in Ia. most of my life and riding for 40 yrs. now and I can't remember such a long stretch of no to low snow ever it is hard to stay positive about this activity. Thank god I do travel to snow but it would be nice to ride at home now and then.
Yes, I haven't gotten to ride Highway 6 to Wilton in a long time. I like riding those ditches.

keep telling your self that . I have always had bikes but that first over the hood powder turn of the season always reminds me they are nothing but a crutch to get me by till sledding season

This might not be too bad. Still freezing at night except for 2 nights. And it is during the week so there won't be that much traffic wrecking the trails.

With temps possibly touching 40 with rain in northern WI, is there any chance they close the trails on those warmer days to preserve what they have? I know it is derby weekend and traffic will be high. Contemplating postponing our trip this weekend and one of the guys in the group brought up this possibility to pile on.
Vilas can not will not close trails until the end of the season. I have seen them down to dirt and rocks and still open until they pull the plug for the season. The way I understand it is, if they close trails they would have to do a complete inspection before reopening them. Common sense would self regulate people to stay off warm mash potatoe trails but that's not the case. Too many tourists feel they spent the money to come up they will ride the trails down to dirt.
Yeppers I could ride now but choose not to. It is not easy to sit in these Spring like conditions but the right thing to do. The xtx is parked for prolly a good week maybe even 2. Plenty of snow in the UP and was holding up well Vilas changing quickly and traffic will burn it down...just the way it is for now.
