Went up to St. Ignace over the weekend hoping to ride Mackinac Island. Our plan was to take the ferry over to the Island if there was no ice bridge. Even with the cold weather over the last few weeks, (it was near zero for a week at one point) there was NO ice. There wasn't any ice in the bay...

That photo shows under the suspension bridge - that's the wrong direction. The ice bridge is from St. Ignace pointing north towards the island and doesn't show up in any live feeds. The waters under the suspension bridge are kept open by coast guard ice breakers.

Does anyone know if the ice over to Mackinac Island is frozen yet, to the point that the "bridge" is open for snowmobile access to the island?

Carry a cheap steel hammer in your sled trunk or bag to tap the ice off if it forms at lunchtime. I tried the old "bounce and ride" trick last year and tore out a segment of track when a track stud got caught in frozen ice that had formed during a lunch break. Ruined the track and had to...

Many thanks for the info! Riding with family over the Holidays with the new Packtalk units. It's really nice to stay in contact. Too bad the Collette's went out of business. We really liked the range of those units. Seems like these should work for us though.

I just switched from old-school Collett Communicators to Packtalk Bold units. The Collett's used 900 MHz technology, which really had good range - nearly a mile. The Packtalk folks advertise a lot less than that range. I'm wondering how far - in reality - the range will be with bluetooth...
