    John Dee

Another really good guy taken from the sledding community at too young an age. I hope this JD Community finds a way to keep going - if for no other reason than to keep his legacy alive in the UP and the Keweenaw.

    Gogebic Area Grooming

Probably, MXZ, there weren't too many folks out and about!

    Gogebic Area Grooming

Just a quick note of thanks to the folks at Gogebic Area Grooming for their post last Wednesday that they were going to continue grooming through the weekend (4/2). On the basis of that post, we put together a final, final, run of the season up to the UP. (We thought our trip on 3/24-3/27...

    Mackinac Island Ice Bridge

Went up to St. Ignace over the weekend hoping to ride Mackinac Island. Our plan was to take the ferry over to the Island if there was no ice bridge. Even with the cold weather over the last few weeks, (it was near zero for a week at one point) there was NO ice. There wasn't any ice in the bay...

    Mackinac Island Ice Bridge

That photo shows under the suspension bridge - that's the wrong direction. The ice bridge is from St. Ignace pointing north towards the island and doesn't show up in any live feeds. The waters under the suspension bridge are kept open by coast guard ice breakers.

    Mackinac Island Ice Bridge

Does anyone know if the ice over to Mackinac Island is frozen yet, to the point that the "bridge" is open for snowmobile access to the island?

    Thawing out a sled?

Carry a cheap steel hammer in your sled trunk or bag to tap the ice off if it forms at lunchtime. I tried the old "bounce and ride" trick last year and tore out a segment of track when a track stud got caught in frozen ice that had formed during a lunch break. Ruined the track and had to...

    Interesting Observation

We always stop and check to see if someone needs help. Along those lines, coming home two weeks ago - on a Sunday morning - I saw two guys on US 51 just south of Manitowish Waters in a pick-up truck with a sled in the back that was missing a wheel and the truck was sitting on the break disc...

    Watersmeet area

Thank you for all the hard work. I'm up with a group this weekend and we were trying to decide whether to venture up the UP or ride exclusively in Wisconsin. That report and the photos convinces me its time to "Go North!". Know that your hard work DOES have an impact as people will ride nice...

Mercer Trails to Open on Friday?

Here we go again - just like last year. The northwest portions of the county need to wait for the rest of Vilas County for permission to open. I understand that those are the way things are run now, I just don't think its fair. Yes, colder temps will make things better. But how can the...

    Skyview Lodge closed??

She's not the first person to ride a golf cart around town. I heard that she took her ticket politely and paid her fine. They are definitely not the "tree-hugger" kind. Paved bike paths aren't for everyone, but many people enjoy riding bikes for miles through the woods - so if paved paths...

Trail 2 - Losing a section due to change of ownership

X2... Thank you so much for your generosity. So many, many people will benefit from your gift of use. I hope that the GRTA, the DNR and whoever else is involved find a way to make the re-route permanent.

Just looking for some feedback on bluetooth communication headsets. which ones are good, which ones are no good??? Thanks in advanced.

Many thanks for the info! Riding with family over the Holidays with the new Packtalk units. It's really nice to stay in contact. Too bad the Collette's went out of business. We really liked the range of those units. Seems like these should work for us though.

Just looking for some feedback on bluetooth communication headsets. which ones are good, which ones are no good??? Thanks in advanced.

I just switched from old-school Collett Communicators to Packtalk Bold units. The Collett's used 900 MHz technology, which really had good range - nearly a mile. The Packtalk folks advertise a lot less than that range. I'm wondering how far - in reality - the range will be with bluetooth...
