I agree that Iron River is a good place to stay. The Lumberman's Inn is right on the Tri-County Corridor. There is also a small motel in Brule, just a few miles west of Iron River.
I was on the trails between Brule and Iron River, WI this morning and they were pretty amazing. Good coverage for this time of year with no observable sun burn-throughs. Even the road crossings I saw were great. 35F and cloudy now.
About 9" reported in Delta this morning (between Iron River and Ashland, WI). One report of 26" in Benoit, WI (just a bit west of Ashland), but I'm wondering if someone was measuring in a drift!
Where is that? I have a cabin in Bayfield County (by Iron River) and I heard we got a few inches. Lovemydobe also lives near Iron River. Some days I'm amazed at how little traffic there has been this winter.
I saw a few sleds near Brule, WI. Road crossings looked pretty good and also saw the groomer about mid-afternoon. However, there was a light rain most of the day. (No ice as far as I could tell, however.)
As I recall, the third largest musky ever caught is mounted in the Moccasin Bar right next to downtown (this may or may not be of interest to you). Also, Coop's Pizza is absolutely one of my favorites.
Yes, I remember seeing snowmobiles and ATVs coming out of the trail into the casino/gas station parking lot. I assumed it was a formal/sanctioned trail, but I don't know for sure.
