being as it's something you will be taking in and out (drain plug) I'm not so sure a heli-coil would be the best choice to fix it. I would look into "keenserts" (not sure if spelled correctly or not) This may be your better option IMO, now to see if they have the size you are looking for.

There should be a chain case gasket there, with that in place there should be no need for any sealant as there would be very little possibility that either surfaces could be damaged or warped, unless somehow the cover or case has a crack in it from a previous failure. As stated with good cover...
