2004 MXZ 500ss w/7200 miles 4 $2600...good deal? Kinda scared of the mileage. Although i know the guy and it has had a A+++ maintenance history. Is it a good buy?

My opinion that seems a little steep for a 500. If compression was still good I wouldnt necessarily be afraid of it, but I probably wouldn't pay any more than $2000. I sold an '05 Fusion 900 with only 4500 miles on it this spring for $2800 and I don't feel like I gave it away. Of course that's the first year Fusion though.....

Isn't that "500ss" the 598cc motor?

Yes.

Off the top of my head, I'd say it's an okay deal -- if the compression, rings, carb boots, etc., are good and if it's been as well-maintained as you say. I wouldn't say it's a great deal.

Since you say you know the guy and it has a good service record that tells me if something gave him problems he took care of it before other problems arose..500ss is a pretty bulitproof motor as far as doo's go...MXZ chassis in the $2500 ranged all day long so for a little more into a rev chassis would be a plus....compression will tell you some but will only show bad numbers just before it is ready to go...For that price I wouldn't be scared of it..take the pipe and manifold off and look at the pistons for scuff and run it..

dab the 500ss is a rev.I think it sounds like a good price especially if you know the guy . I wont buy a used sled unless I know the person.but for 2600 what are you expecting sounds good to me.that 500ss 600 had some issues early on I thought but if it did not burn down in the first 200 mi it has no probs some were running verry lean.every one always worried about Mi on a 2 stroke I know guys with 12k on sleds that have never seen a wrench.

If you know the guy and trust the upkeep has been done(carb cleanings every preseason, lots of grease all winter, wheel and bearing replacements, enclosed trailer, washing salt off, and no damage history) then it is a decent price. If it were a total stranger Id be hard pressed to give him anymore than about 2300. But as long as you know and trust the guy it's not a bad deal. Half the battle these days with the economy is guys cutting corners on the maintenance to save cabbage when they know their "selling it anyway. " But in your case you know the guy has taken care of it. Just bought a used sled on consignment from my dealer that I trust, mainly because they sold the sled new and they vouched that all the maint was done by them and knew it wasn't abused or ever dented. I probably paid a little more but know the sled didn't roll down the side of a mountain 28 times and put back together! So all in all I would say that sometimes more is less and a lot less hassle. My 2 cents.-Jake
