2005 duramax no oil pressure at stop

on the way to work i noticed that the oil pressure would drop to zero when at a stop, if i put it in neutral and reved it up a little the pressure would rise
the oil level is good and i hear the oil pump failure is rare, any ideas?

before i would get to worried you should put known good remote gauge on it .chevy has had a ton gauge/dash/sensor and all around electrical problems .if its not rattling it may be one of them .

The injectors also fail and they pump fuel into the oil and it thins out the oil and loses oil pressure. Your oil level would be high and would smell like fuel.

worried is an understatement after looking it up on the web and finding that you need to pull the motor to change the oil pump!
I have it inside getting warm and thawing out to see if the cold had something to do with it
Called the dealer and made an appointment for next week, hope it doesnt seize up on the way home
at least it showed pressure while i was driving, although low
it isnt knocking or anything...

the first thing i did is check the oil, level is correct and didnt notice any fuel smell

so i started it after lunch in the heated bay and the pressure gauge went right to 60 and i thought cool, but then i shut it off and restarted it and it went to 90, then i shut it off and started it and it went to 120....the funny thing is that the gauge didnt go back down, each time i started it the dial would go further to the right, now its pegged...
sending unit or cluster?

Have the same year truck. Does anything seem different? No loss of power or anything?
Sounds like the stepper motor for the gauge. A common problem with the stepper motors as you have a few that are always moving and that is one of them. My tack will do this and go to zero when it is cold out. After it warms up it comes back. My back lights are starting to go, so as I replace those I will do the motors also. If you are good with soldering you can buy the whole kit of stepper motors cheap and put them in. A lot of videos on youtube on how to do it. More time consuming than anything.

it sounds and felt the same this morning, hard to tell the power, it was below zero with ice covered roads this am
what is a stepper motor? are they on the cluster? i understand you have to take the whole dash apart to replace the cluster
thanks for the info!

See if there is a change in the way it runs first. You should be able to tell once you start it and watch the engine temp to see if it is higher than usual. If you have it in a warm area see if the gauge comes back and works.
Behind your cluster when you take it out and spit it apart to see the electronic board, you will see each indicator has a box that each arm is attached too. These boxes are called a stepper motor. A signal is sent to each one and the value changes as needed.
Look it up on youtube (chevy stepper motor replacement) and they explain how to take them apart and change them step by step.

My oil pressure gauge never works when its really cold. Idles at 0 and revs up to 10. If I shut off and restart when the truck warms she stays a solid 40-50

no the gauge cluster can be swapped out in under 30 min I had to do it on my z71. went with e bey on that on full rebuilt was not much $$ and from when I pulled the gauge and put new one in was like a month and the mileage was the same when I plugged new one in so I guess mi is in the gauge on a chev after seeing that and the ez ebay paperwork i filled out when I ordered I would be verrrry Leary about buying a lo mi chev

I soldered in new stepper motors on mine. Tach and speedo were fudged but my oil pressure is not the gauge its the sending unit I think it gets clogged with oil and sends a false reading.

im sorry, it was the passenger side actuater that required taking the dash apart that i was thinking of
i was thinking of replacing the cluster anyways, cant see the speedo in the dark due to lights out
the local dealer will check it out and let me know if its the cluster or sending unit, they say they can tell....
thanks guys for the info
