Keep the throttles wide open and they will last forever... seriously LOL 05 and 06 were better than earlier models but the 550 motor had a lean mid-range. My dad had an 01 550 he blew up at 150 miles and again at 4600. Make sure to run premium no ethanol gas and you should be ok (my dad didnt).

i also read that 550 motors blew up they ran lean in the earlier days. does any buddy know when they used nasil cyclinder walls?

did 05 or 06 motors have problems?

I believe 07 is when they went to the nikasil cylinders. If i bought another one I would go up a size on pilots and mains just to be safe. There is also an oil pump bleeder kit tech tip from polaris not sure if they started putting them on from the factory but there was a problem with the oil pumps heating up and causing an air bubble in the oil lines. Probably wouldn't hurt to go up a turn on oil pump to increase oil consumption. These things can be found CHEAP and im sure doing a few things can make these bulletproof as they are a fuji based motor (488s were unstoppable)

Had a '01 & '05 and they were good sleds, no engine trouble.

Main thing, like any 2-stroke engine, no prolonged riding at any one rpm, vary the throttle and use ethanol-free fuel if possible.

I recall hearing mid-year 2005 & up had some changes to the engine.

so this where 488 just punch out more to get cc.would person be better off with an o6 instead of 05? like i said ealier 05 had a piston replace the 1st year and since then has about 2000 miles on it.

plus 06 has plastic skies would that be better then metal skies

seems like the 550 that lost a piston early with in 1000 miles ends up losing agian in 3500-4500 range from what i read. and 550 ran past 1000 miles seem to hold up good. like i said earlier i was looking for sled for the kids and was looking to spend 15-1800.00. i would like to get liquid and has to have reverse but i would have to get gen2 or edge with 6000 miles. really want edge for ride and handling vs the gen2. or look at skidoo 550, but i think polaris 550 is better the skidoo??? could be wrong

also seem like mid 2005 was some changes. was wondering with serial number on engine would help. is there anything on the web to look that up?
