A DEADLY weekend in Wisconsin!

Hate to judge but alot of the time Ricky has a mohawk thing on his helmet and a can on his sled. I was young once and had my tuned pipe triples that in the day were wicked fast. Might keep up to a 500 nowdays. Getting older sure changes perspective!

X2 off trial has got to be saferbut we still need trails to get there most of the time
X2 but wishful thinking I'm afraid. If this is the way snowmobiling is going to be (trail racing) I think my volunteering days are over. Let the people who hit the trees or pass me at 40 mph on an 8' wide trail do the work. I know of many others who feel the same way.

Another quick story from this weekend. Was stopped at an intersection taking a break. I could hear a sled getting closer to us from a LONG way off. I mean this sled was loud. Sled was in the middle of a group...rider was standing up....and when they went down the trail this rider gunned it lifting the skis for a good 30 yards before he/she let off. I walked down to inspect the damage and the trench (snow was soft) left by this rider was at least 10" deep.

QUOTE] This post is the story of the past couple of years up North. It's really getting bad. I've had guys wheelie right past me. Idiots.

I was crosscountry skiing (really!) along side the sled trial Sat and I could not believe how many little kids were riding in front of of adults on one sled- it seems like if they hit something that kid is going to get crushed -wouldn't it be safer if the kid rode behind the adult?

I'm also tired of the Ricky Racers and the "Stand up look at Me" riders.
Starting next year, I'll be doing my riding during the week.
To many close calls over the last few years.

Yeah I stand a lot as a way to stretch my legs. I'm 6'4" so that helps a lot.

What is the big deal with standing and riding on these machines? Theres a difference between Ricky Racer and those that stand and ride. I stand and ride to get myslef into different positions and keep myself comfortable. Glad that you sit on your sled for 10 or twelve hours a day Pizza Man.

I know for a fact my boy would have been bucked off this w/e had he been in back unless I had him attached to me in some way.

They make a harness to strap your kid to you and it works pretty good I used it when my boy was very little and rode in front of me and behind me. Had the old seat jack back in the days of the skidoo zx chassis then the 1+1 seat he was about 5 or 6 when he started riding behind me and both he and I were more comfortable and no longer banging helmets. But you are right I would not put him on back without the harness until he was 9or 10 and could stay awake all day. The harness isn't the most comfortable but not bad and it works.

Why should I go out there and volunteer my time to groom trails? So this idiot and other like them can trash the trail? No 'effin thanks!

groomerman, your crew is doing such a great job up there this year.... don't quit...

I bring up flatlanders up/over from MN ND just about every weekend. They get to ride my machines, but are told if the crash or hit someone the weekend is over. The ones that I follow are told not to spin the tracks at any time, and I challenge the budding ricky racers to show me they have real talent by always riding the right side of the trail and never cross the 'centerline' If they can do that at speed, then they are showing the skill to run a bit faster...

Most of them get the point, those that don't can bring or rent their own sleds if they want an invite back.

Oh and tell the ones that want to ride across the lake wide open that they get to buy the new belt, or the new carbides if the decide to ride the road instead of the trail next to it that has a few moguls...(esp 11 N!!!)

Lastly (again) have not heard or seen any posts complaining about lack of signs in MI for bridges or corners. I think no having all those signs does get some to take it a bit easier.

I live and work to get to sled, and don't want to ever have it taken away.

I was riding saturday in Vilas and two times I had groups coming at me very fast, one time the front guy was standing, and both leaders were fishtailing as they were trying to slow down without washing into me as they came into the corner.... and for the next 5-10 miles down the trail you could see washed out trail where these guys had to pin the throttle and spin the track around every corner and stop. A long time ago I figured out it's best to ride ALL DAY without spinning the track, thus leaving the trail just as flat for the guy behind me! It seems really selfish to tear up a track just because you don't know how to control your equipment. Now the only time I spin the track is if I make a mistake. I pride myself in riding without spinning my track, sometimes at rather high rates of speed. It can be done, (not spinning the track) but you can't be a hammer-head.

My condolences to the families of those snowmobilers who lost their lives over the weekend. I cant imagine your pain but hope you can find peace with it in time.

The only fix to this as I see it, it's the manufactor's fault, for making all these high power out of control sleds. They need to start making less HP sleds, and take the payment plans away.

You are so right! OK...so for those of us who REALLY care, what can we do to spread the word in a "positive" manner? It would be easy to blast out posts across the various sledding sites but unless they were worded properly, the "anti" crowd" could pick up on it and just characterize us all as "killers on sleds" or something like that.

The word needs to get out to the masses.....not just the 10% who frequent site like this. Question is "how"?

huh? do the manufactures pull the throttle? do the man's steer the machine? how can it possibly be the man's fault?

that's as bad as its the guns fault..geezuz

Finally a nice respectful post. There is a lot more to this one than what the DNR report says. But most posts on here have it all figured out. He was a good kid on his way to a great man and only post 54 applies.

sorry to the families also..you obviously knew him..but the OP started a thread that wasn't condolences..it was reqarding safety and caution and carelessness..so what you were expecting wouldn't be on this thread

Yeah, like they did in '76 and '77, that worked really well. NOT

yup, its about the same thing as guns, 50% dont know how to use them, and 50% of sled buyers dont know how to ride. geezuz
