I'm 19 years old and have been thinking about the Air Force. Can anyone who is in or has been in give me a few details on if it was a good experience. How bad basic was, if they enjoyed the Air Force etc.

I appreciate all comments

thank you

I was in for 6 years along time ago 1980-86, Basic is not that hard as long as you are in fairly good shape and can pay attention, there is mental stress to go with the physical stress. Take your time talking with your recruiter, don't just jump in with both feet and take what he offers if you don't care for the way he is explaining and going over the information find another recruiter. Go through the list of jobs that the Air Force has to offer and see if you will qualify for the ones that you are interested in. I wanted to work on aircraft and that is what I went after. My job was an Aircraft Weapons Specialist (Nuclear), I maintained aircraft weapons systems which also included munitions loading. Some jobs will have security clearence's of different levels which they will do a background check on you. Over all it was a very good experience for me

air force is the way to go you get a bed to sleep in no 3 month camping trips. drones are a good thing to look in to. a few yrs in and jump in to contracting with some of the big military contractors ez 125000 first yr 200k next and so on.my bro in law just signed 1 more yr for over 325k.

Did 6 years myself. 1976 to 1982. a few years after basic, I looked back and thought what an excellent time that was. As Brad said, don't settle for what they have to offer if it's not what you want. I am currently in a Managemnt position and owe it all to the training I was given while I served.
Good luck with what ever you chose to do.

Just don't be closed minded about what job you want. When I was 19, I told them I wanted to be a pilot. The recruter ask what I wanted to take in college so I could go on to flight school. Dumb me, said, I didn't want college and they could forget it. Something I reget to this day.

My son in law is a pilot in the Air Force. He went the ROTC route. It is a 12 year commitment for him. I have never heard him complain about his job and I think he really likes it.

Economy

With thei economy it might be better to go that route then college. I have a couple of friends who went the service route and they don't regret it. I also have a few friends that recently graduated and have yet to find employment.

Figure out what you want to do once you get out (assume you won't stay in for a career) and then find an AF job that will help you get there. While in get them to pay for school and take the classes to help the career you want OUTSIDE of the AF.

My sister in law just retired form the AF last fall, 20 years. She was in the legal department, not real sure what the name for it is, but she picked up 3 degrees while she was in. She said she has no regrets at all, and is now collecting a nice retirement check every month. She is currently selling time shares in Myrtle Beach SC, she said wanted to get away from leagl stuff. It was funny when she got her first check, she wanted to know why she should work so hard, just to have the government take most of her money in taxes. LOL. I told her welcome to the real world. :)

I say go for it, it's a good job, and you probably won't have to worry about being "downsized" out of a job.

I'm still serving in the Air Force, Air National Guard. Here in Ohio the state offers 100% tuition reimbursement to any university or college, you also collect the GI Bill which gives you enough money to live on while you go to school. Just something to think about if you don't want to go active duty, just remember this... the recruiters are separate, active duty vs national guard, you get the same Air Force technical training no matter which way you go.

Look at this web site, www.airforce.com it has good information on Air Force jobs, there is just about any job the real world has, so think about what you might want to do if you get out.

Another nice thing about the AF is the deployments are not as long as the other branches, usually six months, my job as a vehicle operator we deploy allot so they offer some ninety day deployments. In my job I drive anything with wheels, we do all the vehicle tows, bus, but mostly we drive tractor trailers.

Hope this helps a bit.
