Anybody gearing up for the opener?

Anyone have plans to ride next week(end)? Have a hotel booked for Ironwood next weekend to do some trail riding. Hoping the conditions improve next week, or will be a no-go. This little warm spell isn’t going help matters either, hope it works out as we’re pumped to ride!

Figured I’d share a little Dec 1st story to get things going, still haven’t learned my lesson yet!!

Back in 2012 me and a few high school buddys were staring at the Krupps cam every day in study hall seeing the snowpack build all week leading up to the 1st. We were too young and naive to realize just because Twin Lakes has snow doesn’t mean the entire UP does. Well, we had the bright idea of going up to ride, even with a shaky forecast. We stayed at my buddys cabin in Crandon the night before to lessen the drive. We were all too pumped up to go ride, that none of us got any sleep. So at 3-4am we decided to head up and drop off in Bruce Crossing. Got there about 5am in the pitch black, with only 6” of snow on the ground and took off. Headed up 3 to Mass, hopping mud hole after mud hole after mud hole. I was the leader and it was bad, I couldn’t imagine how much worse it was following. Once we got to the grade in Mass City, heading north was a great, other than the fact it started raining! We stopped at Krupps for breakfast, and I remember talking to “the breeze” that morning who was eating breakfast there as well. Then, we headed on our way to Houghton as that was our goal. We needed gas by the time we got there, and the bridge was closed, and none of us had been to Houghton before. I recall riding bare city streets and sidewalks as a teenager trying to figure out how to find a gas station. Eventually, we filled up and headed back south. It was really pouring rain at this point and the snow was diminishing fast. When we got back to Mass, we thought hey instead of riding all those stupid mud holes again, let’s take 13 thru Rockland to Bergland and we’ll hit the grade and head back! Well, we made it 3/4 of the way to Rockland. There couldn’t have been more than 2-3” of snow on the ground there, and as you would know it, we were riding on nothing but rocks ironically. Obviously this was a bad decision and we couldn’t afford to try to go all the way to Bergland. So, we started ditchbanging and road riding due south till we ran into the Trail 8 railroad grade. We eventually hit it, and there was nothing on it but a 2 foot wide swath of a few inches of snow in the middle, with bare gravel on each side. We had about 10 miles to go to get back to Bruce like this, and we went stupidly fast to get it over with. When we got back, all 4 sets of carbides were gone, and we wrecked the skis on all 4 sleds as there was gaping holes worn right through the bottom, along with torching the hyfax as well! Definitely a memorable ride highlighting our teenage stupidity!

no plans for next weekend, just hoping to get my trailer up to where I can easily access it this weekend, right now I can see it but get it...no way. Hoping to at least fix that this weekend, so I can start getting ready to ride.

Great story Indy! I bet when you finally made to to Bruce, you were happy as heck to have made it, but also thinking how much fun it was!

Memories like those will never fade away.

Perhaps we will bump into each other (figuratively) this season!

Great story. Reminds me of the time me and my buddies decided to head up for a skiing trip (before any of us knew what sleds were) at 1am in a SEVERE ice & fog storm. Similar to you, we had planned to leave in the morning but couldn't sleep so we packed up an loaded up. There were so many vehicles in the ditch on the drive up it was crazy. Arrived to the ski resort around 6am only to realize that they didn't open for a couple hours. Gas station breakfast and caught a few z's. The ride home that night was un-safe - We had to make it back home because we were too cheap to pay for a hotel. I recall getting out of the truck and sprinting down the side of the road a couple of times just to wake up.

Hopefully training a couple new groomer drivers and getting the trail’s panned maybe take a ride. The good part about living where the snow is or very close to it.

I had the itch last week after prepping the sleds with new plugs, gas, oil, and new batteries. Where I'm at in Presque Isle (WI) I can head out the back of my property and hit Ottawa forest roads in the U.P. which takes me up to Marenisco where I can catch the trails. I didn't go because I didn't want to aggravate anybody hunting in the area and I don't enjoy being shot at. There is plenty of snow to do it. That will be my plan in about a week when I'm back up there. Does anybody out there know when Wisconsin, (Vilas County) trails can open? I realize it's still early but the last several years it was almost New Years before they did. Difference this year is we have snow.

Vilas never opens until after extended deer season. Iron county is the only one that would open the 1st if there is good snow. Also I don't believe all of Vilas has good snow at this time mainly just Boulder and Presque Isle has decent snow in Vilas.

Indy, Great story and it's a memory, but I have the opposite of that but just as bad...

2003 or 4ish, we had a trip planned in February with two buddies (past HS at this point but all of us graduated together) This was going to be the first long trip for us Wed to Sunday. At this point, the two of us did not have much vacation time. I managed to plan and took Wednesday through Friday off. One of my friends could not get off till Friday and the other had a landscaping business and took most of the winter off at that point. The plan was to use my buddy's trailer that he used for his mowers. Then two of us drive to Gaylord and ride from there to the bridge and cross and see how far we could go and find a room for two nights. Then meet up with our third friend back in Gaylord Friday.

On Sunday I had an EMS call with my Volunteer FD that I went on for a full arrest. The guy was big and we had to carry him downstairs and as I did I felt something in my back pull but was ok... Then my friend with the trailer brings it over late Monday night. It was a block of ice and none of the lights worked on it. We stuck it in my garage and let it melt overnight. Spent Tuesday rewiring the trailer... Wednesday morning I go to hook up the trailer to my truck (an extended cab) and I feel something pull in my back... I ignored it and finished hooking up only to still have issues with the lights. Pull the plug on that trailer and use my two-place and load one in the bed of my buddy's truck (a single cab 8' bed). Drive to Gaylord after confirming there was enough snow with the hotel... Temps were on the rise and not looking good... I think around Grand Rapids there was no snow... Get to Gaylord, my back cramped from the drive and now light rain is starting. On top of that, we are not impressed with the amount of snow. Also, there is no way it melted in 6 hours, or even when we called again from Grand Rapids... We still pushed on. Hop on the sleds to go to the bridge and the trails were just shot... Went to a gas station to fill up and finally came to our senses and said we're not riding in this. Went back to the hotel and canceled our Friday through Sunday stay. (only thing booked at this point) and we drove back home!

Getting out of bed killed me the next day, my back was so cramped up... Little did I know this was one of my back problems. and yes I went in to work on Thursday. That trip was the worst, but I bet one of the most remembered!

Vilas opens (and closes) as a county when all the clubs have finished trail prep and the county has done their inspections. Then it pretty much depends on snow cover and not usually before 12/15. Best to check the Travel Wisconsin site which will have it posted as soon as it happens.

Indys story reminds me of a trip Kathe and I took from Bruce Crossing to Copper Harbor in 1998. All good until leaving Houghton on the return trip where it started raining. By the time we got to Krupp's we were drowned rats. Sandy bailed us out with plenty of hot coffee, food, and dried our clothes. We then beat down the watered down trail for Mass City and Bruce Crossing. I shall never forget Sandy, and Richard! Always good times when being around them!

More snow on the way for Tuesday into Wednesday calling for another 8-12” for western UP. So for the loss from the warm up the last 4-5 days this could bring the trails to rideable for some parts.

I have so many similar stories I can’t even remember
I don’t regret any of them tho
It’s for the love of the game
Me and my Brothers and buddies have been riding Thanksgiving weekends for over 30 years
We were almost able to ride every year over those years with it being awesome about 2-3 times in those years but we have a great time everytime
We used to go to Finland Mn for many years and some years it would be grass till 10 miles away
Also just a few times over the years there was absolutely NO snow and those times we would go to the snowcross races in Duluth
Ever since about 15 years ago when I bought the shack and now moved over to the Lakeshack we have ridden every year
Yes it’s hunting season but we wait till about 2 hours after dark and run Twin Lakes down to the Mosquito and back and around Krupps field, now Krupps plows the whole field so we can’t ride around there but we make the best of it
I drove through Ironwood yesterday and they had the best looking snow on the trail but if you want to ride you really have to live sledding like me and be willing to burn some hifax and carbides
I rode the last two weekends in Twin lakes and it sure scratched the itch and sadly my season is over before it starts now with a second shoulder surgery I’m the days to come with a 6 month+ heal time
Chance of snow this week a bit but I say ride if you can
Besides you don’t have to call Sandy Krupp to see what the snow is like anymore like before you were born, just look at one of the cams and see for yourself

Does anyone know if the trails have been at least panned yet? With the hunting season I'm not sure if the groomers have been out? Or maybe they go out at night? I'd like to come up December 1st(this Thursday) for the opener. Anyone have any input? Did the trail out of Ironwood get re routed?

Opener you get what you get. There is a Trail 2 reroute thru Ramsey but I don’t know if finished yet. Good luck and have fun!
