Anyone else have the "pleasure" to use Windows 8?

I hate to sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but what the heck were they thinking!?

If I wanted my new computer to act like a tablet, I would have just bought a tablet! What a messed up OS! Great for social media and other mindless stuff, but not so great for business applications and a PITA to try and configure into anything that would be friendly to a business environment.

Thankfully that machine is only running the new Woods Cam and I will not be using it on a daily basis, but I cringe when I think about trying to do actual WORK on a future machine running the "funzies" OS.

Ok rant over. Anyone else try it out yet?

Brought to you by the folks that gave us Windows ME®, and Windows Vista®. And this after they did so much better with Windows 7®? I think I see a pattern here!

I learned a loooong time ago to not be the first kid on the block to try version 1.0.0 of any software product, never mind an operating system!

Haven't used it in a PC environment, but really liked that style OS on the smartphones.

Me too, but NEEDED a new machine to run the Woods Cam and no Win 7 machines left. All at my sources locally were Win 8.

I can totally see that. In fact, after I got past the initial shock of how crappy it was, I could see that their approach is to make the Windows OS seamless with smartphone and tablet OS's. It is basically a smartphone or tablet OS, not at all like the old Windows OS's and in my opinion a not good "work place" OS. I suppose with time one will be able to get it to be more user friendly in a business environment, but for now I would recommend anyone that is looking for a new machine for business purposes to get one with the old Windows OS. And, for anyone looking for a computer to act just like a smartphone or tablet, then I would say go for Windows 8, you will love it- no joking here at all. The "streaming apps" are a cool feature, just not of any use to my in my business world.

Just bought 9 new PC's for work here. Made damn sure they had Windows 7 professional..... Like what was stated earlier, designed for tablets and smart phones not work!!

Coming from a prominent IT guy that does that stuff for a living....XP will be totally unsupported by probably the first of the year (unfortunate) and he would also wait to upgrade until 8 until at least the first service pack that is anticipated by March of next year. Personally I have not used 8 yet, but am a lover of XP, hater of Vista and I learned to tolerate 7 (←not too bad). As frnash and others have said it is a wonder how they can get it "SO" right on some releases and then "SO" wrong on the following editions.

If they would have just expanded and perfected XP, minus the security protocol they enlisted in Vista and subdued in 7, they could have avoided any upcoming editions for a number of years IMHO!

I really loved XP, too, but I haven't had a problem with Vista, either. We just got new computers delivered at work. Wonder what OS is on them. I haven't heard.

I did grab a new laptop with windows 8 to replace my old vista machine that I used for "pleasure" surfing in the evening after work. I wanted something that booted faster and was lighter to handle but not just a touchscreen like my wife`s ipad. I like being able to have the old fashioned keyboard and function keys, yet be able to quickly use the touchscreen if it serves the purpose. I have had it about a week so I am just getting the feel of it and it seems to be fitting the bill for my needs. I have not used it for anything other than "fun" stuff but when navigating to the desktop it feels like windows 7 is lurking under there to some degree!

I did find it painless to jump into a new laptop now that I save all of my documents, files and pictures on the cloud so there was no info to transfer over to the new laptop.

I was gonna upgrade my Vista laptop to 8 when it came out, but seeing how 8 works and it was made for tablets and touch screens as John said, I think I'll just get a discounted 7 and use that for some better performance.

My mothers computer went down and she bought a new one Windows 8
asked me to give her a hand I could not even figure out how to turn it off
So I am thinking she is really in trouble if she needs to do anything besides checking emails

Not designed for work???? Did you not find the windows desktop? It is in there.

The #1 thing I think is cool is the open development community for the platform like the Apple store or the Android Marketplace. (Apple being pay to play-develop)
The apps will work across all devices. It will take some time to be adopted but I think MS is going in the right direction. It is about time.
I work for a large publicly traded insurance company. IT is currently a big challenge having all of these seperate devices for corporate solution. The new MS devices (phones - tablets - etc) will seemlessly interact with enterprise MS solution that are already in place. MS Exchange email being the big one.

They also have some cool stuuf in the works.Xbox 720 and the 7" tablet that will work with the xbox. xbox is going to more of a media center device that also plays video games.

I know change is hard and MS is taking a big risk but it is time. They are being left behind.

Yea, it's in there, but the simple fact that you have to hunt for it was a problem and I think will be a problem for lots that grew used to the "Old School" Windows.

Honestly, what I missed the most was the start button. I know, it sounds stupid, petty and trivial, but was something I had grown very used to and I believe others as well. But, as dcsnomo showed, someone has already developed an app to bring it back in one form or another. Seems to me that MS could have done this themselves. Covered all bases.

I totally get what they are trying to do with the new OS as far as making a strong connection to other platforms (smartphones/tablets) and in the long run, I think it will probably work out good for them. I am not against change (at least I never thought of myself as that type!), it just seemed like they had gone in a direction with the new OS that was not very business world friendly or maybe "business world used to the traditional Windows OS" core of users.

Folks can say what they want about Microsoft, but there are a lot of smart folks working there and it seems like perhaps they did not think this thing all the way through and could have included things like the start button in the new OS.

I honestly wish them all the best. I know a lot of folks hate Microsoft, but not me. Just not a big fan of what they did in Win 8.....YET!
