Anyone ever have someone HIT your trailer?

Last weekend I took my empty 2 place enclosed Triton to my girlfriend's sister's house to pick up a box spring. It was the only thing big enough to transport it. They live about an hour away.

I parked on the street, we loaded it, and then we went inside for about 45mins. During that short period of time, someone hit the trailer and took off. They swerved and hit the left rear corner. It doesn't appear to have too much damage but in order for me to open the trailer, I had to go home and loosen the left rear bracket held on by two bolts. Then I could remove the pin and open it.

It looks like it bent the bar on the left side of the cap going from front to back and there's another bracket toward the front that needs to be put back in place.

Anyway, I'll try not to be long winded here. The next day a kid and his parents were going door to door trying to find out who's trailer it was. I couldn't believe it. I spoke with them and their insurance company.

Has anyone had something like this happen? The person was going about 20mph when they hit it. Do you think the frame is bent? I think the cap may have a bent frame.

The adjuster is going to the dealer where I bought it. How would anyone know if the frame is bent? Do you think it did damage to my truck?

Thanks!

Does not take much to bend alum. trailer frame & enclosure as I had 2 totaled in 2 years. #1 deer ran into trailer, #2 drunk hit me on interstate 90 both were totals & does not pay to repair them. Then I bought a United Experss Trailer much more heavy duty & deer bounce off it.lol:)

You auto owners should cover it if it was hooked up to your truck. That's what i've been told. You shouldn't have to pay a deductible.

Didn't you want a new trailer anyways??

Actually I'm dealing with the other person's insurance that hit it. They admitted to hitting it and called their insurance company Progressive.

I sold that other trailer and bought a brand new 2011 Triton Elite 10' enclosed.

I took the settlement each time & bought new. My buddies bought both trailers from insurance company or me don't remember details. I did agree with insurance company that I could not reinsure those S/N trailers but didn't matter as I was buying new trailer.

Well then that sucks!! Progressive is pretty good to deal with. When my wife had her ATV accident, they were all over it. Very easy to deal with. Hope you have the same luck.

UP in two weeks?.......Free lodging. BYOB, gas and oil...........

I'll be up there if they have snow...and if I get a new trailer lol!

How can someone determine if the frame's bent?

Had someone go thru a redlight and broadside my R&R enclosed in 2006. Trailer was empty but from impact the frame bent (per insurance). I was glad though because I wasnt a fan of the brand and went out and bought a Triton which I love!

They just 'said' the frame was bent? How fast was the guy going when he hit it?

Don't worry your truck will be fine the trailer is probably toast but then you get a new 1! Progressive moves fast & easy to deal with. The 2 people that hit me that had Progressive paid every penney for repair shop of my choice. Good company. If in doubt Progressive will send someone out to inspect your truck too.....just ask upfront not later.

I spoke with progressive. I'm going to drop the trailer off at my dealer and call them. Then they're going to send the inspector out.

There is the good side of getting a new trailer. However, the thing is brand new. I took it up North 5 or 6 times and that's it. I put the ski guides and paddle grabbers in it. I also put two Polaris stickers on it!

I guess new is better than slightly used! Hopefully they'll total it out!

Take all your hardware out & reuse. They won't cover hardware or stickers just trailer & enclosure. No one can make money repairing trailers or enclosures much cheaper to replace but know your numbers because Progressive inspector will make the value call on the spot. Going to be painful & you have to pay tax for new 1. Mine like yours had just a couple trips then drunk hit me the other trailer had a few years on it & I made out better on that 1 since was a deer hit & was my insurance. The adjuster was a snowmobiler but he started out low & I was not too proud to beg told him he was killing me kept riding him up finally in the end we both were laughing. All said & done & I had a good deal on the older 1 not so good on the new 1. Win some lose some just the way it is. Good luck!

Thanks Whitedust. It will work out the way it's supposed to.

It's a new trailer but bound to get damaged in some way shape or form...just like anything brand new.

Whatever happens, happens. Everything works out perfectly :)

I had one totaled a few years ago. I had a Triton for about 2 weeks and had a car cross the center line and total it. I ended up buying it back and selling it. I had insurance on it. With my insurance it wouldn't have been covered just because it was connected to the truck.

it depends on your policy anything hooked up to the back of my truck is covered.
I did have to make sure of it when changing policies a few yrs back I think it costs me like 10 bucks a yr.
