On my last ride I was going over some bumpy areas and my speedometer stopped working. The sled was still ran fine for the next 300 miles til I got back in. I changed the speedometer cable and it still is out. I was just wondering if anyone knew what else could be the issue. Any help would be appreciated Thanks!!

You broke the key in the speedo rt angle drive, below the secondary clutch. You will have to take the cover off and try to pick the brolen cable piece out of the drive axle. This is usually the first indicator that the bearing is going out. I would plan on replacing that while you are in there too. There are several areas on this forum that discuss how to do this. If the bearing has never been replaced before, count yourself lucky it lasted this long.

Speedo going out is a sign of the drive bearing failing on the cats. That's what it was on my buddy's old sled and one cat I had a couple of years ago.

I'll say it for the third time on the bearing. Seems like you could have tested the cable instead of getting a new one

Thanks for all the info...I am going to attempt to fix it myself for the first time and don't have a manual. My local library has a cat service manual that goes up to 1998. Just wondering if anyone new if that had the right info to change my 1999 sleds bearings? Thanks again.

we had one go out this past weekend.2000 zl efi esr, remove suspention, remove drive chain cover and gears, remove secondary to get access to lower bearing cover.have to wait for parts cause the geared end of shaft had cracks in it where the reverse gear would grab.not a quick easy fix by any means.too bad it wasn't just a jackshaft bearing

Its not that bad just take your time. When you let it go like that some times you have to work on getting the old inner race off the shaft almost like its welded. Make sure when you get the new bearing you get the speedo key for the drive so you dont have to make another trip

Check with your auto parts store for your bearings. It is a standard bearing a good auto parts store should be able to set you up for about 12 bucks.

Thanks for the help so far everyone !! I have the suspension, and drive pully out and am now working on the chain case but am a little stuck. Do I need to remove the chain case or just the chain case cover? Thanks again for all of your knowledge!

I now have everything disassembled and there was essentially nothing left of my driveshaft bearing!! Now the problem I have is removing the speedo key from the drive shaft. It broke off on the inside and am not sure how to get it out.... any Ideas will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks again

pick at it with the smallest drill bit or something like an ice pick. The key is not solid its a tighly wound spring. You should after picking at get a small piece of it that you can grab onto with needle nose plyers

I am starting to put everything back to gether and have the new driveshaft bearing on but have a quick question. My old bearing was completely shattered and when I took my speedometer plate off (the part that bolts to the hull) there was a round metal peice inside there mixed in with all the grease. My question is, is that metal peice supposed to be in there or was it just shrapnel? Thanks again!
