Are rebuildable shocks even worth it?

I'm doing an Indy 650 and I would like to get some rebuildable shocks. I REALLY want this thing to ride as good as it can with the stock suspension. Is it worth getting a quality set of fox shocks or just find a set from an old XLT. 2703-954.JPG

I'd look for a set of used Fox shocks in good shape, then get them rebuilt. That vintage I'd think you can get the shocks fairly cheap. Most shock places will do a rebuild with new seals, oil and a gas recharge for $30. I would t get the black body shocks. Good shocks is what makes the ride quality.

Buying cheap shocks seems counter productive regarding your goal of maximum possible ride quality. I like the idea of buying used rebuildables and having them rebuilt. It's nice knowing exactly what you're dealing with instead of mystery shocks.

I recall years ago an aquaintaince that joined us on a trip north needed a new shock for his older mid 90s sled. He decided to be cheap and buy a hydraulic, non-pressurized shock. Not even 50 miles into the ride he had to stop as he had no damping. The shock was very hot to the touch. The sled wasn't really ridable in that condition (very easily bottomed) so he had to limp it into town.

Right on Jet,
A friend of mine was riding a new Ski-Doo 500 SS a few years back with oil shocks near the Lake Superior shore close to Munising and had a "Skid" shock break in half, flip over and lock up the track. The trail was fairly smooth and he nearly went over the handlebars. I think it was the second trip he made on that sled, sad.
