Are the groomers up and running?

To all the complainers: if the groomers are broke down and the trails are bumpy as he!! are you going to stay home? Or are you so desperate to complain about something and now that we have snow you switched from lack of snow and expense complaining to bumpy trails and lack of grooming.

This site is swarming with posers. Ignore the wannabes. I suspect some of them spend 23 hours a day in a cell or 8 hrs. A day in a cubicle, (same thing).

I would like to know the real story about the grooming.

The 13 was pretty beat to the west of Rockland. The South Boundary trail was not touched early in the week. Trail 8 and connecting trails were not touched for at least 5 days west of the Bergland system.
BTW, the Bergland crew did a great job with all the traffic.

We rode and had a good time, but it was the worst trails we have seen in quite a few years.

South Boundry Road (11) and Lake of the Clouds (1) are both in prime conditions. I dont get to groom every night cause of groomer sharing but i would if i could. Been on it last 2 nights be on it tonight and hopefully rest of the week.

X2. Had the same experience. I have been very critical of the Gogebic area grooming in the past, but last week they did fabulous, and the places that I usually brag about really dropped the ball. Followed the groomer through Mass City, and part of the way around the 13 loop, and It was panning 12 inch moguls. The trail was just as rough behind the groomer as it was in front of it. The groomer was driven, but the trail was not groomed. A huge waste of time and money. I hope the issue gets resolved, good people and a beautiful area.

now i would say that is worth investigating, what night and what trail? ^The Greenland side of trail 13 loop?

I do know the groomer did break down with hydraulic problems and it's possible you may have been following it in but if you can tell me when and where I'll check into it

Just a follow up from my trip. We arrived in Hancock late Monday night (3am). Tuesday we unloaded the sleds in the pouring rain. Talk about bad timing. Regardless we rode from the bridge north and although we rode in drizzle all day and the trails were soft they were relatively smooth. Hit every trail between hancock and copper harbor except for the trails that go from Lake Linden to Gay and then Lac Labelle (heard poor trail reports). Did make it to Gay, just used the trail that comes over from the west. Sorry, I forget trail numbers and don't have a map. Headed down to the Mosquito that night and 3 was in reasonable condition. Next day we got a major cool down and headed south. Followed the groomer for a while south of Houghton on 3. He was rolling up lots of ice chunks from the previous days rain and then overnight freeze. Took the Freeda loop and it was pretty rough. Not 3 foot moguls by any means but enough to be uncomfortable especially after the soreness from the previous days 200 mile ride. Shot down to Parkview after that and hung out for a while. 3 was rough at this time. Overheard lots of complaints from people coming up from the south. One guy said that the trail he took somewhere between Bergland and Mass was 4 ft moguls and he rated it at a -10. It was the main corridor trail (i believe its still 3 down that way). After parkview we planned on taking the trail that heads SE off of three just to the south of Krupps but my sled started acting up so decided it'd be best to work our way closer to the hotel. Stopped at VFW in South Range and rode fresh groomed trails back to hancock from there. Overall, 90 percent of the trails I saw that day were in poor condition. We may have been able to find some better riding with more ambition and a cooperative snowmobile. Next day we decided to run north again. Took the trail from lake linden to gay and lac labelle. I could tell they hadn't been groomed in days but the 10 or so inches of fresh that fell the previous day and night made them very rideable. From Lac up to Copper hit and miss. Some very good areas, some pretty rough areas. Stopped at the Mariner for supper. From there rode freshly groomed trail down 3, eagle harbor/point loop down to Calumet. Passed the groomer near Calumet but trail was still in good shape in front of him. We put on 450 miles with no injuries or major breakdowns. Some great trails, some poor. My conclusion is its just luck of the draw on good trails. Wednesday was 10 degrees and very low traffic with fresh snow coming down and trails were poor. Thursday sleds were just rolling into town, same temp and a little more fresh, trails were great. I've read reports that the trails were great over the weekend so starting to contemplate if its really necessary to come up during the week. I know less traffic but it seems maybe less grooming during the week as well? Sorry for the lengthy post but wanted to fill yall in.

we have a groomer down and it has been stuck on trail 13 halfway to Bergland and is serious. Should be out of there today and someone is heading that way with other groomer. Bottom line, it's the best we can do and nothing else can be done.

I saw the groomer there Lenny. What happened to the groomer and how do you tow it out of there? I assume that is an issue with a tracked machine, no ability to steer w/o power.

just today at the meeting I learned the New Holland 135 had a blown hydraulic cylinder on 13 loop and could not operate the front of the drag and limped machine in. I figured as much but Kip told me what had happened 2 days ago and than was confirmed tonight. Trust me, our operators know better than to polish moguls!
