Just a follow up from my trip. We arrived in Hancock late Monday night (3am). Tuesday we unloaded the sleds in the pouring rain. Talk about bad timing. Regardless we rode from the bridge north and although we rode in drizzle all day and the trails were soft they were relatively smooth. Hit every trail between hancock and copper harbor except for the trails that go from Lake Linden to Gay and then Lac Labelle (heard poor trail reports). Did make it to Gay, just used the trail that comes over from the west. Sorry, I forget trail numbers and don't have a map. Headed down to the Mosquito that night and 3 was in reasonable condition. Next day we got a major cool down and headed south. Followed the groomer for a while south of Houghton on 3. He was rolling up lots of ice chunks from the previous days rain and then overnight freeze. Took the Freeda loop and it was pretty rough. Not 3 foot moguls by any means but enough to be uncomfortable especially after the soreness from the previous days 200 mile ride. Shot down to Parkview after that and hung out for a while. 3 was rough at this time. Overheard lots of complaints from people coming up from the south. One guy said that the trail he took somewhere between Bergland and Mass was 4 ft moguls and he rated it at a -10. It was the main corridor trail (i believe its still 3 down that way). After parkview we planned on taking the trail that heads SE off of three just to the south of Krupps but my sled started acting up so decided it'd be best to work our way closer to the hotel. Stopped at VFW in South Range and rode fresh groomed trails back to hancock from there. Overall, 90 percent of the trails I saw that day were in poor condition. We may have been able to find some better riding with more ambition and a cooperative snowmobile. Next day we decided to run north again. Took the trail from lake linden to gay and lac labelle. I could tell they hadn't been groomed in days but the 10 or so inches of fresh that fell the previous day and night made them very rideable. From Lac up to Copper hit and miss. Some very good areas, some pretty rough areas. Stopped at the Mariner for supper. From there rode freshly groomed trail down 3, eagle harbor/point loop down to Calumet. Passed the groomer near Calumet but trail was still in good shape in front of him. We put on 450 miles with no injuries or major breakdowns. Some great trails, some poor. My conclusion is its just luck of the draw on good trails. Wednesday was 10 degrees and very low traffic with fresh snow coming down and trails were poor. Thursday sleds were just rolling into town, same temp and a little more fresh, trails were great. I've read reports that the trails were great over the weekend so starting to contemplate if its really necessary to come up during the week. I know less traffic but it seems maybe less grooming during the week as well? Sorry for the lengthy post but wanted to fill yall in.
