Backcountry Backpack

Pack for the ride

Cuzzinalof. I think you have a good list and a great phrase to match your list (honestly think I could spend a few nights out in the woods if needed). Everyone has to remember that you are packing and preparing for your ride. I could just about guarantee the Blutooth could not carry 1/2 of your gear from what I see in his pic and that may be just fine. My point is pack for the ride and the conditions. I would bet there are more emergencies in the mountain that are NON-AVY related than AVY related so why don't they teach a class for that? I ride 90% of the time in the trees, small meadows, short chutes, open draw, etc... We are usually 15-25 miles from civilization. I prep for staying out in the woods for a night. I don't like to carry gear on my body because I want to be a agile as I can when running through the trees. I also had bad experience with a probe poking me under the arm when I took a digger in the trees. That is why I am carrying Probe and big shovel only when I am in that type of area. I can hear it now "How do you know when an AVY will happen?" I don't , but I do recognize areas of potential concern and take precautions. I see guys in Centennial WY that play in the AVY area that is right along side the trail and within walking distance to their trucks. They can carry everything they need in a slim back pack.

Let's get back to the main question at hand " What kind of Back Pack?" The back pack that works with all of your other gear to supply you with as much room and comfort as you need for the type of riding you are going to do! A guide once told me that emergency gear is no good if it is for a different type of emergency than you are at!!!

Techsledder

I have the same sled that is why I made the comment about gear space. To feel comfortable on that sled I added more room to the sled. H-bar bag and one of Paul's tunnel bags. That allows me to carry a backpack that weighs less than 7 lbs with shovel and probe. My back and shoulders should love me now and I will not feel out of balance with all that weight on my back!!!

Skylar, Doesn't your seat come off ? and do you have a compartment on right side by your shin? p.s. I would take the sandwich out of the handlebar bag for now ;)

Okay, I found the bag, Klim Nack Pack, but I can't find a good shovel. I want something thats retractable, aluminum blade, and a saw. I've been searching ebay, hmk site, klim, bca, and come up empty or I'm just missing it. A little help would be appreciated.

Seriously speaking... check out the TNA Gear packs. I looked long and hard and ended up with my mini suitcase backpack. It is comfy, probably weighs 40+ pounds, and I'll be the first one you're buddies with in the event we get stranded in a group. I honestly think I could spend a few nights out in the woods if needed.

I have this shovel with a saw in the handle. It has an aluminum blade, is lightweight and seems good. The price (under $50) seems decent also.

I like this shovel! Its pretty slick looking and seems to have all I need, but does the handle telescope in and out. It says in the ad it does, but I can't see how it would. Does your handle telescope in and out? Thank you very much for the info. :D
