This is very sad to hear and I feel do sorry for his family. BUT I know this is going to piss a lot of people off (dont care) when I say this but my sympathy level goes way down everytime I read one of these stories that always seem to "alcohol involved" In fact it really gets me mad becuase these deaths are a lot of times preventable and in the end someone elses poor judgement just makes the rest of us and
the sport look bad. Its getting really hard to feel bad for these folks anymore Sorry but its how i feel. Go ahead now flame away!

I agree with osmann's statements above. It does not make what happened any less tragic and I certainly feel very very sad for the family and the rider. He did not set out with the goal of last night being his last ride ever. But if the difference was the alcohol involved then that was a choice that comes with very often extremely tragic results. Zero tolerance is the only way to get rid of accidents due to alcohol. When I ride with other people, there is no drinking period. If they insist on drinking then they don't ride with us. If more and more people took this position then people who drink and ride would run out of people to ride with. This may be a dream, but we can only try. So again, I pray for the family and the rider. This is a terrible thing to have happen.

I agree with Rev....while this poor fellow paid with his life, he left family behind who will also pay the price, and the news always says, "Snowmobile related death"...so the industry takes a hit...reinforcing the notion that it is a dangerous sport and needs to be policed more heavily....and of course there will be those who use this accidental death to further the cause against snowmobiling altogether.

Rev is right tho...proactive approach is the ONLY way....and even on this board there are folks who think nothing of tossing a few down and riding on...when as every experienced sledhead knows... you need 100% of your abilities 100% of the time and all it takes is a slower reaction to a single incident to hurt someone who might have otherwise got stopped, got braked, got heard, got smart BEFORE it all happened.

There is a reason why ZERO tolerance is the norm for most clubs and while we all have to enforce the rules for each ride, it is up to us to keep these numbers down or simply put...pay the price for the entire sport.

Im not trying to preach as to what i think others should do. Nor do I want others to preach to me what i should do. I dont really care what others do with there lives. But I dont have much sympathy when dumb decisions result in tragic results. We hear these stories mulitple times every year and it just makes me angry. If a person can t learn from others mistakes or there own mistakes, I just cant muster much sympathy anymore. Like I said I feel bad for his family. I feel even worse that this person didnt value their feelings enough to make a better choice.

X2 Olsmann. Why can't the news captions say "alcohol related death" instead? It wasn't the sled's fault. Our sympathies to everyone involved, it sucks, but we all know what happens when we mix alcohol and machines.....eventually it ends poorly for someone.

My sympathy to the family and friends left behind. I agree with complete sobriety if your gonna ride. Things happen way too fast.
Landowners please mark gates, cables with reflective markers. It so simple and cheap and may help save lives, could even be your own.

He was a fun happy go lucky guy, well known in the Houghton community. It is tragedy.

Agreed, some are preventable some maybe not. Alcohol doesn't help. I could have started a lets bash the sport because of drinking thread, but my goal was to send out some supporting thoughts from a fellow sledder. Although I didn't know him, I'm sure there are a bunch of people really upset about this tragedy.

Rip I lost my uncle 9 years ago at age 41 from a sled accident, he taught me the sport and there isn't a time I ride my sled I don't think about him, this family doesn't need to hear what the man did wrong, they need to hear are thoughts and prayers, one of the toughest things my family and I went through
