Bald Eagle?

We have so many on our lake, if I don't see one almost every day, that's unusual. When I first bought the place up here in 1991, there was only one very large nest on the lake. Now there are 4 and they are thriving. They stay here year around. Believe me, they kill their own food when the water is open, and they are very proficient at it! They prefer live fish over road kill any day.

I just can't imagine the turkey as our national bird. LOL They made the right choice!

They are all over around here too. All they are is a good looking buzzard. Just a scavenger that doesn't even kill its own food. Benjamin Franklin was right - we should have had the Turkey be the official bird.

I was thinking the same thing what Ben stated. Don't get me wrong, I get excited when I see them to, just don't think these birds belong on a pedestal with other avian hunters. I am fortunate to live on a lake that has osprey and eagles. I witnessed many times where the osprey catches the fish, just to have the eagle steal it mid air. Very cool to see.

And the coolest time, a memory I will always cherish, my dad, son and I were fishing for perch - and catching BTW, on lake Winnebago. We had world war II warplanes overhead for the EAA and an eagle and osprey were fighting over a fish, and this was happening all at the same time. Was just surreal.

I grew up in Missouri, and was always fascinated with weather. Especially snow. Living there, we always dodged the big snow, but every once in a while, my dad would drive me to see the big stuff if it was a few hours away. That passion led me to get a degree in meteorology and pursue a career as an on air meteorologist. You basically take whatever gig you can get, and for me, Alexandria Louisiana was that location. I was going there for two years, then escaping as far north as possible. Within the year, I met the most fantastic girl in the state, and we were married darn near instantly. That changed my direction regarding my dream of living in a snow globe, but we travel to it often. We go home to St. Louis when possible for big snows, and have hit blizzards in Lubbock TX, and Joplin MO to give the kids a taste of the good life. Family ties run deep down there, but our goal is to spend a couple weeks in the Keweenaw until our twelve year old is in college, and at least a couple months each year thereafter. It's truly a one of a kind place, and I'm so glad we found it, and all love it.
I love the story.
It's truly a one of a kind, but keep that a secret.

I almost hit a bald eagle that was feeding on a deer carcass. I was shocked how large the bird was, it looked like a person with snowfall limiting visibility until getting closer.
I have been to a few falconry sites and the Bald Eagle always steals the show.

If you want a species of anything to never be extinct, just come up with a good tasting recipe that includes it and allow ppl to raise it.

Can you imagine what Thanksgiving would be like if they did make the turkey the national bird?
Yep. The turkey would sure make a great replacement for the eagle in the Seal of the US Air Force:

And we could have a new "F-15T Strike Turkey strike fighter"!

Oh wait. WHAT? the Turkey can't fly? Ooops! :concern:

In that case, maybe more appropriately "the F-35 Turkey"? :lemo:

Awesome stories! I just couldn't believe my eyes. We just landed in Louisiana after a long day of travel. I had to chuckle at the parking attendant who was shivering in the 48 degree "chill". On to the next best thing since we can't just stay up there. Getting the rods and tackle ready for surf fishing in the spring!

Wild Turkeys can fly. And they are just as majestic as an Eagle. All in the eye of the beholder. One day my stupid dog was taking a nap. He likes to lean up against a tree with his legs up in the air. So he might look kind of dead to an eagle. A big old bald eagle set up in an evergreen tree just above my dog and was kind of eyeing him up. I was worried about the safety of my dog so I removed him to the garage. I am not making this up. Wouldn't have had to worry if it had been a turkey in the evergreen tree.

Am I going crazy, or is it possible that my family spotted a bald eagle between Bruc Crossing and Watersmeet on our way home today? I just wanted to verify this was possible before bragging to my friends and family. It was near the roadside, in plain sight. Basically, I don't know if there are any lookalikes. We spent four incredibly short days in the Keweenaw, and explored and enjoyed. What an unreal place. The kids got their snow fix for the year! Now it's back to Louisiana where they are preparing to shut down the state for a possible light wintry mix Friday night!

White head, brown body with white tail eating road kill; likely an eagle. On my way up WI 45 I saw one three days ago in Three Lakes, WI. It sure is nice to see them bounce back, now if we can ease lead shot in shotgun shells that would help too.

Saw a Bald Eagle in Detroit last year I did not believe it, but I know what they look like. I did some research and yes it was true they live on the Detroit River.

Supposedly there were also some photographed along the Red Run Drain in Warren, too. I know I've seen deer in that area.
