Bald Eagle?

Am I going crazy, or is it possible that my family spotted a bald eagle between Bruc Crossing and Watersmeet on our way home today? I just wanted to verify this was possible before bragging to my friends and family. It was near the roadside, in plain sight. Basically, I don't know if there are any lookalikes. We spent four incredibly short days in the Keweenaw, and explored and enjoyed. What an unreal place. The kids got their snow fix for the year! Now it's back to Louisiana where they are preparing to shut down the state for a possible light wintry mix Friday night!

Wouldn't be suprised if it was an eagle. Pretty cool you come up from so far south to enjoy the AWESOMENESS of the UP. Great to hear that your kids enjoy the snow. And want more when down south? Are you a transplant, that once lived in the Great White North, and now lives south? Or always lived in the south, and knowing your missing out on some of the most wonderful latitudes on the planet?

I grew up in Missouri, and was always fascinated with weather. Especially snow. Living there, we always dodged the big snow, but every once in a while, my dad would drive me to see the big stuff if it was a few hours away. That passion led me to get a degree in meteorology and pursue a career as an on air meteorologist. You basically take whatever gig you can get, and for me, Alexandria Louisiana was that location. I was going there for two years, then escaping as far north as possible. Within the year, I met the most fantastic girl in the state, and we were married darn near instantly. That changed my direction regarding my dream of living in a snow globe, but we travel to it often. We go home to St. Louis when possible for big snows, and have hit blizzards in Lubbock TX, and Joplin MO to give the kids a taste of the good life. Family ties run deep down there, but our goal is to spend a couple weeks in the Keweenaw until our twelve year old is in college, and at least a couple months each year thereafter. It's truly a one of a kind place, and I'm so glad we found it, and all love it.

Bald eagles have made a big comeback in WI and MI over the past few decades....we even see them in SE WI now.
Also had a Golden eagle around the lake house in NW WI 2 summers ago.

Its usually easy to recognize a Bald Eagle. If you think you saw one you probably did. :)
And I'm always amazed at how far from the south people regularly travel to get to the snow. Over the last several years we've been spending the week between Christmas and New Year's at our place down in Tennessee. And the hundreds and hundreds of snowmobile trailers heading north while we're heading south is mind boggling. And we usually dont stop seeing them coming until well south of Champaign.

saw the same one over the weekend. on the east side of the ditch eating road kill am sure as the crows were there also. closest i have been to one in awhile.

We live in W/N/W IL. Bald eagle's are almost everywhere now. All they need is some kind of water to fish. I don't believe they get their white head for the first year. We enjoy watching them very much. They have many "nest" cams in our area also.

I'm sure you saw a bald eagle as there are bald eagles all over the Keewenaw and UP. I saw one scavenging some "trail kill" when I was UP in December near Twin Lakes. Last year I saw 5 of them eating a deer carcass in a field near Baraga. That was truly amazing to see. I regret not stopping and taking a pic to this day.

I'm kinda disappointed if I DON'T see a Bald Eagle on a trip...... So many more out there than there were 20 years ago.

They are all over around here too. All they are is a good looking buzzard. Just a scavenger that doesn't even kill its own food. Benjamin Franklin was right - we should have had the Turkey be the official bird.

I acasually saw 3 between Thursday and Saturday. One near white pine while riding and then 2 more near Eagle River on the way home.

Yep road kill and will see multiple eagles. Very common and well fed in Vilas.

I was surprised how fast eagles & crows picked a deer carcus to the bone. Saw a deer lying dead in middle of road late afternoon a couple of weeks ago . I dragged to the road shoulder as was a hazzard to traffic. Next morning eagles & crows swarming the carcus by afternoon bare bones.

Welcome to the board UPwannabe & glad to hear that your stay here was a good one, The Bald Eagle as well as the Golden Eagles have made a huge come back since the mining day's shut down & mother nature has had a chance to heal. They are all over this great area of ours & it is nice to see. Ya'll come back now, hear?!?:loyal:-Mezz

I've seen many of them dive out of a tree, catch many "alive" fish. Some of the fish are pretty large. Sauger, Walleye, Carp, Northern, doesn't matter. What ever is available. Have seen as many as 50 plus fishing below a dam in the winter months on the Mississippi river. Really interesting to watch them work. But yes they will scavenge also. Turkey to eat, Eagles to watch!!!
