Bayfield

Does anyone know of a good place to stay in Bayfield that is on/near the snowmobile trails? The places that I am finding say that you have to trailer your sleds and I am not interested in doing that.

Any help is appreciated!

An owner up there is on this site i think..cant think of his name

You are thinking about Gary Dalzell @ Woodside Cottages. Not 100% sure if you can ride right from his place.

To the OP.....why do you want to stay in Bayfield anyway? Nothing much to see in winter anyway....IMO

Heck, I wasn't too impressed with Bayfield this fall when we were there. Had higher hopes I guess. Consider northwest of there maybe? Or back toward Hurley, not necessarily in Hurley though. Ashland maybe?

Hayward/Cable the hub for that area plenty of hotels with trail access ride to Bayfield. Unless you are tired of Hayward/Cable hotels.

Bayfield always seams to be a bit anti sledder IMO. Pub and Grub not to far away, excellent riding around there.

nice trail in Bayfield but in winter the shops and dining are not all open. wife loves it up there . if lake is frozen U can get to trails any place on water.
cant think of the names but there is deff 1 set of cabins/resort on trail up there. I would not overlook deff less traffic than down by cable hurley etc .
try woodside cottages think u can ride from there

You have to trailer from Woodside Cottages but Gary and his brother are known to take guests out and show them around on the endless logging roads up there. Great guys and you can usually get some early riding in up there. I went up there last December and broke my new sled in on the logging roads with Gary. Had a blast!

It is a trip that I am planning with the wife. She wanted to go somewhere different this year. She's heard about the restaurants and B&B's up there. Doesn't sound like much of it is open though.

We've stayed in Cable before (Telemark Resort).

Another option was Sault Ste. Marie..............

The Soo is Great, but I'm biased. Good riding, most years. The restaurant situation is pretty good. LIL Abner's and The Antlers have some great ambiance. If there's enough snow you can ride sleds on most all city streets. If you like bar hopping they have the "barmuda triangle" there are something like 13 bars in a 2 or 3 block area. There are some good sites to be seen on the trails Tahquamenon Falls, Paradise is cool. The bluffs up on Bay Mills indian reservation have some great views. And along Whitefish bay headed towards Paradise has some nice spots to stop, check out the ice floes etc. You can ride to Mackinac Island if the ice bridge is open, pretty cool destination. If you like casinos you can ride to several.

Stay on Lake Namakagon east of Cable. Get a room at the Garmisch. If you have ever been there you will understand why your wife will like it.

You could stay somewhere around Washburn. Washburn is right on the trail to Bayfield if they decide to groom that part of the trail. We always go on a day trip to Bayfield while staying on Lake Namakegan. That is when the trail is open. Some years they don't groom to Bayfield for various reasons. However there is endless riding up in that area north of hwy 2. There is usually a little more snow up there also. There are not a lot of landmarks. You have the Pub and Grub - which is always great - and you have Port Wing and I think Herbster. But there is very little traffic and a lot of miles of really nice trails. Bayfield itself has never been a real snowmobile friendly place. Not in the 20 years we have been going there anyway. But there is stuff to see there. Mackinack island is like going back in time to the 60s. I have never seen so many VW bugs in one place. I doubt many of them run but they don't throw them away. One year when the big lake was frozen we ran from Mackinac back to Washburn. There was a set of tracks we followed. We got to Washburn and pulled in to gas up and the guy at the gas station said that it had just frozen up a week ago and there are currents out there and the ice is never safe. So I guess i don't recommend that particular route. Other than that it is a great area to ride. Not many trail stops but a lot of scenery.

You must be refering to one of the apostle islands, Mackinac island is at the eastern end of the UP. no cars on it its more like going back to the 1890's. Horses and bikes for transportation. Only the governor has a car on the island.
