Looking for trail conditions in this area. According to Travel WI they are in GOOD shape but I know that website tends to exaggerate a bit. We would be making a quick weekend trip up from IA to ride 1.5 days but we don't want to ride crap. I know if we went a little further to Tomahawk for example the conditions would be better but we are trying to keep our drive time within reason. If anyone has any info would appreciate it? Also, is the trail system pretty good around here? Thanks. Jim

Jim, it's a great trail system in that area. Been there numerous times on both sleds and atvs. When it's groomed and in good condition snow wise, it's fun! Great places to stop also. This would be the first area I would choose to go to for a quick weekend trip. Unfortunately I don't have a snow report for you though. Don't hesitate at all to go if conditions are good!

Thanks IOWASLEDDER. That is good to know. It sounds promising. Now if I can find someone who can tell me what the snow conditions are that would be great.

If you are staying at the big hotel right off of 94 we went east and south towards a town called millston. Trail head right out back from the taco johns. Trails are nice in the area, but different when you come up on atvs in the snow. I would assume more snow towards the northeast direction.

The east part of the county is mostly state forest and some beautiful trails. Nice place to stop in Hatfield. I'd loop north through Clark County. A little more snow to the north.

My parents have a few rental cabins (http://www.trailsend-cabins.com/) just NE of Black River Falls in Hatfield with access to the trail. I talked to them this afternoon and they said they had a descent base with 8" more of heavy wet snow from yesterday. I don't have any specifics on trail conditions, but I know I'm heading that direction Saturday for a short ride. Good Luck and Good Riding!!

Honestly, I'd start in Black River Falls, Jim. I'm not sure where you are staying though. From there you could head to Millston as stated above. Than on to Hatfield. There is a great stop called The Mug in Hatfield---get a pizza there! Head north out of Hatfield up to Clark County. Stop at Doc's Bunkhouse in Merrillan, keep going north from there and head to Rock Dam--couple good stops up there---Dam Bar is one of them. It's a great time with good stops and a good route there to rack up some miles!

You will have good riding this weekend if you ride the areas described above. Those trails never disappoint. No need to drive all way to tomahawk after the new snow. I think you will find the areas similar to each other also.

When BRF and Sparta area have the snow, I want to say it is as much fun riding there as almost anywhere up north.
If it is true that they have the snow, then you will have a blast.
Stay safe

All of Jackson county trails are open, reports coming in from Four Corners (Jackson/La Crosse/ Monroe meet) is that up there is good snow! Cataract has alot of low hanging branches along with trees and branches down. Be aware that all state forest trails (if I recall correctly) are now allowing ATV's on them, Jackson is a good area to ride with nice wide trails and some good variation. I recommend staying in Black River Falls also and riding the east side down to Millston then up to Hatfield and back across for a good trip. Plenty of nice trails that I can reach in a couple hours from my place. If you need more info don't be afraid to ask!

BRF should have good snow but I would stay north of Sparta in your travels...the whole area had an ice base from Christmas snow but here in Viroqua we received mostly rain from the big event...Sparta-La Crosse was the dividing line for snow. I just finished loading the sleds in the trailer to head North tomorrow.

Always loved the area. West/Central Wis. is very scenic country!!! The hills and the bluffs are beautiful. Been going there for 45 years. How ever we no longer go to any of the areas that allow the ATV's. There are a lot of surrounding "snowmobile only" areas that get our riding/business now. We don't spend the money and time to travel up there to wallow around in ATV destroyed trails. Just our choice!

Cool, sounds like we are headed to a nice riding area. We found a VRBO place that is just north of BRF. My guess is we will make a loop to the NE since the snow only gets better in that direction. Hatfield appears to be not very far north from where we are staying. Thanks for all the good feedback & keep it coming if you have other suggestions.

Just drove through the area. Trails look good and most are freshly groomed. Wouldn't hurt to make a stop and a town called York at the end of the day can be fun there. Have a good weekend.

Photo of the trail by Hatfield plus a photo of the ski/tubing hill (Bruce Mound) just west of Hatfield can be viewed here.

Once you get away from the county forest you should be off of the shared ATV trails. The trails to the west (South West to North West) are large rolling hills through farm country. Very Scenic.

The Mug in Hatfield does have great Pizza.

Enjoy your trip

I live in Neillsville, (Clark Cty) we had about 8- 10" of snow out of the last storm. Trails are open in Clark and Jackson Counties..... alittle more snow in Clark County but all should be good. Neillsville Granton Trailbusters are out grooming and they groom to Granton out to Pray and south of Neillsville towards Lake Arbutus. We have a great base. I would guess trails will be good to very good. I'll be riding this weekend!!

Either way I'm towing 4hrs to ride Sat and Sun with the gf, its been 20 yrs since I've been to brf, so how many quad/snowmobiles trails are there? I dont want to be dissapointed if I decide to go that direction, or we mite go to Stevens Point and not worry about quads,,etc...any input would be great!

Alright, might be a few Hawk fans invading central WI. I used to own a quad & when you get a certain amount of snow they just don't get around that great so I can't imagine them out riding the trails after this last snowfall but maybe I am wrong. FYI - there will be 6 - 7 of us. Mostly newer Polaris sleds with a couple Doo's. If you see us say hey. Jim
