Several routes

From there you can go many ways. Be sure to head up to Porcupine Mountains and Lake of the Clouds and take trail 11 and 102 back down to Lake Gogebic and back over to Bruce. I have attached a pictue of trail 11.

Another day be sure to head up to Greenland and take the trail 13 loop that comes out on trail 3 near Twin Lakes. It's a great loop but can be wet early in the year in spots.

If there's enough snow to go south, be sure to hit trail #107 and #150, awesome trails. Stop by Bond Falls for some sight seeing. Do you have a map for the area? If you have any questions, shoot me a PM. Have fun!!

BC is a hub you can go anywhere N-S-E-W but in a bit of a LES snow hole. Always more snow N-S-E-W of BC may be just slightly early for BC Dec 16-19. Check JD for trail conditions the LES can be fickle early until UP has complete coverage. Good trails south to Watersmeet but may be better off heading North to the higher areas mspease listed where they get more LES.

Running Bear Resort is in Paulding, MI totally different than BC. Paulding gets system snow from the S & LES form the N. From RB you have excellent access to Watersmeet trails so ride Trail 2 as far as you can w-e about 100 miles each way if snow coverage & can haul on this trail...107 n-s is 1 of the best trails in the UP loop 107 n catch 8 w to 3 south see Bond falls too. 2-e to 15 n very nice trail but nothing for 52 miles or so until you hit Sidnaw but no gas after 5PM eastern time then 8w to 107s or 3s & loop back to RB. RB can also set you up with unplowed Forest Roads so be sure to ask. You also will have access to WI trails from RB .....WI lots of Twistys. Have fun & ask for trail conditions then ride into the best snow coverage that's what I do. You are in & out of central & eastern time zones so know the time where you are I get screwed up with that all the time going north.

yes sorry about that will be in Paulding mi my friend kept saying bruce, so you say the time zone changes where is that happen exacly? and no gas after 5pm? so you cant use credit cards at gas stations? or the gas stations close at 5 pm? thanks for the help

gas

gas station hes referring to is in sidnaw and they dont have credit card capability. there is gas in bruces crossing , iron river , mass , rockland , baraga all within 40 - 50 miles of r.b. and they all have credit card capability . time changes by bergland area i believe and not sure about change north , but who cares when you are riding, lol have fun.

The four counties in Michigan that touch the Wisconsin border are on Central Time, that is: Gogebic (Bessemer), Iron (Crystal Falls), Dickinson (Iron Mountain), and Menominee (Menominee).

Any good map of Michigan should show the county boundaries, including Plat Books and DeLorme State Atlases.

Paulding & BC on Central then changes somewhere in the woods between BC & Mass City /Rockland /Greenland area. frnash may be able to tell you where the county borders are but difficult to know on snomo trails. Reason to know time is getting snomo parts & service when they close at 5PM Eastern & you still think you have an hour to get there & already closed & cell phone coverage sucks in that area too. You have gas in Paulding as well up the street from RB. Filling in Sidnaw is a habit for me as top of 1 of my loops from trail 2 up 15 n like I said 52 miles of nothing on that route to Sidnaw & I already have about 50 -60 miles on before I head up 15. 15 not well traveled at all & nice wooded twisty trail with lakes along the way to play on.

time changes 4 miles south of the Running Bear we are in Ontonagon Co on Eastern Time. So the best way to figure any where north of Watersmeet is in Eastern Time. Also 1/2 of Lake Gogebic is central and 1/2 is eastern cut off is Fishtales and Root Cellar they are the end of central. You won't have to worry about gas plenty of places to get it and we'll go over this too when your here just to make sure your good. Great Trails U.P. here your gonna like it for sure!

Routes for trip to BC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ttallin,

Sorry it took so long, but I've been very busy lately. Remember, the earlier you can get everyone going in the morning the better the trails will be. Fuel and oil up the night before so you can get right on the trail. Friday will be a little less busy than Saturday, so I'm going to send you on Friday where it will likely be more busy on Saturday.

From RB, take trail 3 north to 8W to BC. Continue on 8W a mile or so out of town and take trail 3N to Rockland. There is a bar and restaruant here called Henry's Never Inn. Great food and very well known! About 1-2 miles past Rockland you will come to a T in the trail. Take a left on trail 13 to Greenland. When you cross the highway and get to the next T, Pat's Yamaha is to the right 1/2 mile and they have gas if you need it. At the T you will want to go left or North on 12 to Ontonagon. Continue through Ont on 12 towards White Pine to trail #1, which is about 24 miles from Ont. About 6 miles from #1 you will see trail 101 to your left. It only goes about 4-5 miles, but it's a great fast run. If you take it, watch for an area on the left where sleds have gone in and it looks like a big sand pit. Follow the tracks to the top and you have an amazing view! Take 101 back up to 12 and over to 1N.

Once you get to trail #1, take it north to White Pine and Silver City. In White Pine there is a good place to stop called The Konteka and they are very snowmobiler friendly. Be sure to top off your tanks here as that will be the last gas until Lake Gogebic, which will be about 80 miles. Take 1 north to Silver City. You will notice that about the last 2 miles closest to the lake the snow amounts decrease as lake effect doesn't come down until a mile or two inland. Take trail 1 all of the way up the mountain to Lake of the Clouds and walk up to the overlook area. If you haven't been there, it's a must see! Take trail 1 back down the hill and at the bottom, take trail #11S towards Wakefield/Lake Gogebic. This is the trail I posted a picture of on your original post. This is a 2 lane asphalt road closed in the winter for sledding. One of my all time favorite trails!! There is another overlook you take up to the right a few miles down this trail, but I forget the name of it. There are also areas you can play off trail here if you want. You will go about 16-18 miles on trail 11 and then take 102 south to Lake Gogebic and stop at the famous Hoop 'N Holler. Trail 102 is a combination of some twistys and wide and fast, another great trail!

From LG you have 2 options depending on if you want the short or long way home. Short way. Take trail 8 E to BC and home. Longer route. Take the lake, trail 1 or trail 13 south (refer to your map) and take 2E to Watermsmeet. Continue on 2E to 107N to 150 (which only goes left) to 3N and home. Total miles with option 2 will be 220 miles. If you take the short way home, be sure to take 107 and 150 while you are up there. Awesome trails!

Day #2

3N to 8W to BC. 8W to Bergland and 13N to Rockland. 8 is a railroad grade and gets boring to me, but it's only 18 miles to Bergland from BC. I am sending you this way as I want you to ride 13N between Bergland and Rockland. You could always go N on 3 again out of BC if you wanted to make it a shorter ride. Outside of Rockland, take 13 to Greenland again. Turn right at the T past the road heading towards Pat's Yamaha. You will see the 13 loop to Twin Lakes. It is 36 miles long, but will be one of you favorite loops. At first it is tight and twisty and then it gets wide and fast. Good off trail opportunities in this loop too. You will come out on trail 3. Take a left on 3N and take a break 2 miles up at the Parkview, very nice hotel and restaurant. From here you can continue N on 3 to the Freda Loop, trail 120. Take the loop and it comes back to trail 3. Turn right or south on 3 back to the Parkview. If you wanted to skip that loop, from the Parkview, take 3S all the way to Mass City. You will cross the fire steel bridges and it's a great view if it isn't dark out. Stay on 3 towards Rockland. Take 3S to BC at the big intersection before you get to Rockland. Once you are at BC you should know the way back. Be sure to have trail maps with you until you get to know the area well. I have been going up there 3-5 times a year since 1993, so if I can help any further, let me know.

Must do's

Lake of the Clouds
Trail 11 and 102
Trail 13 loop from Greenland to Twin Lakes
Bond Falls (very close to where you are staying)
Trail 150 and 107, also close to you.

I know you will have a great time and I hope you will let me know how it goes. I would print this and take it with you if you can.

Thanks,

Mark

the runningbears are also some of the best people you will ever deal with. I have stayed in there cabins and they are sweet. You will love it there, it's also a great hub for ATVing in the other seasons. Stay at the RB once and your there for life
