Cable/Hayward area conditions?

Put on 260 miles Friday 1/29 and Sat. 1/30 - conditions were good Friday and started out well on Sat but deteriorated quickly with the warm up on Sat. - it was 42 ' F in Hayward. On Saturday we went north east to Clam Lake, WI and there were at least 200 sleds at lunch time in Clam Lake while we stopped - non stop fueling and lunch. We headed back south and had a lot of dirt and rocks in the turns. They need more snow and cooler weather. The area is calling for 1-3" on Tuesday and some small amounts on Friday this week. I would look at going further NE if possible this coming weekend, or hopefully this blizzard will get the trails open south.

Saturday and Sunday did a number for us. Both days were supposed to be partly sunny/overcast and it was warm, sunny and beautiful! Not so good for trails. Grooming seized and trails were in rough shape.

Our snowfall for today has fluctuated in the last 7-10 days anywhere from a trace to 12 inches. This morning they are calling for anywhere from 6-10. Grooming should pickup based on the snowfall that is scheduled to begin about 1pm this afternoon. Snow is also forecasted daily for the next 5-6 days. The way the wind is predicted to blow and swirl around Lake Superior, I wouldn't be surprised if we picked up some extra lake effect, which could be the 5-6 day forecast of snow. I will update in the next few days if someone else does not beat me to the punch!

In the words of JohnDee, *Think Snow* and Ride on!

5 inches last night on lake Namakagon. Reports sound like down by the Chippewa Flowage is about the same. East of here (Mellen, Glidden etc) has 9-11 inches - a nice day ride! We will gladly welcome more snow with open arms.... Keep it coming!

Here's an update from last weekend in the Hayward Cable and Clam lake area. Friday we left Nelson Lake at 7:30 AM to head up to Lakewood's for breakfast. Trail 4 to 8/31. Topped off with fuel at Runamuk and got the lowdown from Jim. Next we hammered down 77. 3-4 inches on a freshly groomed trail made it pretty awesome riding all the way up to Lakewood's. Then off to Clam Lake on 8 which was also just groomed. Some heavy snow all the way there. Now to head north. Gassed up at Clam Lake cause we were not sure how far north we would make. Ashland was the destination. Took 9/25 north all the way to Sanborn. That trail also was just groomed the day before. We were batting 1000 at that point. The view out of the winding trail around the foot hills was cool....but once we popped out on the top and over looked the valley was even better. Lunch at the Trails end pub. Pretty good too! From there it was off to 4. This is a newly constructed trail that is fast....very nice railroad bed and a little fireroad action was a nice release. It made quick work all the way back to Grandview. Choppers had some good frostys to knock the trail dust off. Then we bounced down trail 15 to the Pioneer bar and got gassed up. Garmisch was next down on the other side of the Namekogon. From there we hit 70 over to 63 to try it out since its recent reopening!!! Groomed all the way until we got back in Sawyer County. Finally we make it back to the Sawmill Saloon in Seeley for some pizza and Rye IPA's. 197 miles summed that day. Saturday was spent on south of Hayward on Grindstone and Lac Courte Orelles watching the relic riders vintage ride....totally awesome ride. Many thank you' s to the trails we rode. What a fun area. If you haven't put any miles on the Hayward \Cable area...your missing out.

Deerfoot Lodge on the Chip Flowage is a solid place: bar, hotel rooms, cabins and gas. Just depends how many people you have.

I second the Deerfoot. Also the Lakewoods Resort outside Cable. Anywhere you stay up there, you will have a blast! Its just a cool area to ride.

I also agree with Deerfoot. I have a place over by Anglers Haven and we rode from Minocqua to the Flowage and just rented a place at deerfoot. They were very accommodating and great to stay with.

So, how bad are the trails in Cable? Guessing not much of a base anymore - so probably a lot of rocks? Is there enough snow to even continue grooming?

took 15 to Grandview and back to Namakagon, then 90/25 to Clam Lake. Yesterday around 1pm-6pm. All got groomed and was in great shape. Lake is pretty bad. low snow, glare ice. but there is currently enough to groom and they are out. I left my cabin really early this morning, and we had 1-2 inches overnight.

Thanks Special K, trying to get one last trip up there this year before the spring.. Did you ride south at all towards Lost Land Lake or the Chip?

I did not head south. I do know someone who did head to the Chip and she said it was good.

check out the Namakagon Trail Groomers facebook page for the most recent updates and pics. I do know two people who were in that area for the past couple days and said it was good. As you may know, conditions change daily once you get into March.

Does anybody know what the deal is an trail 25 just north of the Tascobia trail 10. Theres a stretch there of about 5 miles that's never been groomed this year. just a two track going thru the woods with 3' mogels! Whats the deal no swamps to cross or wet areas. I think it was like that last year when we came thru there too.
