Looks like things are going to change in a BIG way for Vilas/Iron Cty. Johns forecast, plus Intellicast already has Eagle Riv at 11-18 inches for Sunday PM to Monday PM. Normally they are very conservative.
I'm GONE come 1/25.

Look it up yourself...I'd post it, but it's against the rules. Intellicast been very mean to me last few years - not today. Just in time for St. Germain radar run, which I avoid if I can't use 70W via the road parts of trail.

I agree with the cost of doing business. Blows my mind that people will "stay home because their sleds expensive" in marginal conditions with a season that's 12 weeks long at best. Slides are $40 bucks and ten min of labor and high end carbides are $100. big deal. If $140 takes you out of three decent days of riding then this sport isn't for you. Or like above, buy a $400 sled and beat your brains out in the "trail" system in southern wi or ill 2 days a year.

Its interesting how actually little amounts of snow with good grooming can really make a difference. We rode in Minocqua this weekend, and it was even a holiday weekend, and how well the trails were maintained. Sure there was some icy corners and snirt close to town but majority were very good. You don't need big snow to have great trails.

Years ago I calculated the cost of sledding over 5 years per mile. This included sled and trailer depreciation, insurance, passes, gas, oil, repairs, lodging, etc. It came out to be around $3.00 per mile ridden. I haven't done the math since and don't care. I just try to get as much quality riding in as I can and enjoy! This was for 2 sleds.

Drove through Dunbar,Florence ,Crystal Falls Monday on our way home , would not recommend riding anything South or East of Iron River Mi. unless you have stock in a carbide company. You could see a lot of stones sticking through.

NOway!

Thanks for the honest report. That's all that most of us give and want to hear.

I will have over 1500 miles this season by noon today (I’m on the same carbides and slides I started the season with) - everyone whining about low or no snow just stay home. I even heard someone whining about it sitting next to me for lunch yesterday, and we had just rode in on a fresh groomed trail to the place we were sitting at!!

You truly can’t please everyone.

If you like to snowmobile, no matter the temp, there has been snow to ride for over a month. And it’s not just in the UP.

I would start north of Tomahawk, and ride either to the east towards Sugar Camp, or go west and north of Minocqua (stay away from the high traffic areas, and you should be alright)...The railroad grades were quite good surprisingly.

n. of Tomahawk is a set a bides west a here....LOL

Let me explain....we have a destination that we ride from.
Your riding circle and mine are about 40 miles apart east to west and the snow gods saw fit to pinch it off short of here.
The cond. were slowly improving but then the warm up hit. I hope the next few days will fix that.
The local clubs here do a fantastic job but they need ma nature to cooperate.
This isn't about the cost of bides, it is about the obviously bad cond. that would ruin them that fast.

Ask any of the day riders that normally come up Hy 32 from the Fox Valley and drop in Mountain, Lakewood, Townsend or Wabeno....ain't happening yet....probly have to get to Three Lakes or beyond so far this year.
