If you look closely at the pic, you can see how the taillight wraps around. there's 3 taillight lenses. i just need to get the lense that wraps around off, i took the screws off. i'm wondering if you have to take stuff like the seat off or something.....?? i know it's a burnt bulb and NOT the voltage regulator.

worked on a 99 500xc-
in the owners manual is states you have to 'pry' it off carefully. they used a really good glue on that light assembly. a heat gun couldnt hurt.

There is a good seal around the lens. You just have to make sure all the screws are out 5 total and then it takes a little prying. Being very carful not to crack the lens. Just take your time and don't put a lot of force on it.

i couldn't get it, i just put the screws back in and i'll live with it. the right side taillight works but the left doesn't. the brake light works all the way around though. i don't think it's worth cracking, i looked it up and the part brand new isn't cheap

Ah, someone else asking this. I had the same problem on my '99 XC 500. Found that if you take the two bolts that hold the back of the seat down from under the tunnel, you can lift the seat up enough to reach up, twist and pull the bulb socket out of the plastic light housing.

One catch, the "factory" bulbs don't fit through the hole. But you can put the smaller ones in the socket, twist it back in, and walla, light!

I know, I know, that dead bulb will pound around inside the light casing, but a small price to pay when it's too cold to heat gun it apart in an outside garage.

Try it, let me know what you find.

When I removed my I removed all 5 screws and then pryed the cover starting at the front corner. It took a little more presure than I felt comfortable with at first but just put a nice steady presure on it and the seal will slowly start to break. When the seal starts to break at the front corner then start to work your way around the lens. Just take your time and it will come off with out the lens breaking.
