Close down the Town...Bergland

Does every snowmobiler think the trail pass is a ownership card? Tried to let some folks know that Highway 64 N out of Bergland was NOT a snowmobile route this morning and the response I got was "last year the DNR said we could ride up here to the trail". I called him out and let him know that no state highway has ever been a snowmobile route and that the 7 sleds following him were also subjected to the $200 +/- fine for riding where they damn well please. Gotta let folks know that this is gonna end up in Lansing with a ban on sleds if it continues. Plans are being made with legislators as we speak, to protect the rights of property owners to proceed with shutting down trails because of infringement due to neglect of laws. Ignorance will only be tolerated so long. Best we can do to protect our sport is spread the word on the trail. Honestly getting bad around here.

And when they get tickets they'll complain about the Gestapo-like cops.

I was up 2 weeks ago coming in from the north to the east when I got to M28 about 10 sleds in front of me made a right on 28 to go to the gas station follow the leader idiots.I know it's late in the season and the shouldn't have to be done but is it possible to put a sign there for gas directing them across 28 to the gas station not that they would read it

It is legal to ride the unplowed shoulder of state highways in MI. It is illegal to ride the plowed portion unless crossing a bridge.

I believe that homan is right on this. I know it was researched on here last year. While I,am on the subject,I live 100feet north of the trial and one block east of the park in Bergland.lived here going on my 7th winter, lot of sleds go up my road to get to gas or Antonio's.I can't think of one problem. With all the money these riders bring into the area,I think you're blowing these few problems way out of proportion. Just my opinion.

It can get confusing at times if you're not used to an area, I know I missed turns and followed tracks and ended riding places I shouldn't have. I always felt bad and try hard to be a consciousness rider it can be tough at times.

When we ride an unfamiliar trail and get quasi-lost we will usually follow previous sled tracks back to a trail / bar / gas station. Fairly normal behavior I believe. Not going out of our way to trespass but I am sure sometimes it has happened. One time an old guy started waving a gun at us after one of our group rode over his picnic table. Pretty sure we were trespassing that time. Just kidding.

Riding east out of Wetmore, you can ride on the south side of M28 until you hit the crossing trail before Shingleton. You have to go up and over one bridge then back to the side of the road.
It's also use in the summer for ATV's(very dusty at that time of the year)
You can also ride the shoulder of H-13 from the Beartrap east to Munising. Also the same going west. It's one way to get to Picture Rocks. before you get to Munising, you turn going south to the gas station. I don't remember the road but been doing it so long, I just know where it's

X2. Most sledders try do right thing.
Sounds like a lack of signage or enforcement. More laws just make more lawbreakers.

Not sure where peeps are riding the hwy but very confusing riding north on trail 13 I think coming into Bergland for gas. After a few failed attemps I threw up my hands let others take the lead with same results. We were very fustrated at that point but never left the trail finally made it deeper in town & no idea if on snomo route but finally found our way to gas station. Just not marked well in our case & super fustrating.

Been just about a year since we were in Bergland no idea how we found our way in but gas was on other side of 28 filled up left & nobody wants to go back which is aok with me as only went there because others wanted too. I spent most of 90s early 2000s in White Pine so feel nothing new there for me but nice area..:)

What would they whine about if the sleds stopped coming there...cheese and ric....e no one is getting there jollys by
being one block off target in these 5 block towns...if you need strict adhearance to route then
MARK THEM so there is absolutely NO EFFIN MISTAKE!!!!

When the sleds in your town out number autos and trucks 50 to 1 why not expect the rubber tire folks to be AT LEAST
as cautious as you expect us sledders to be?????
I have asked this many times....why are we the vermin once we get out of cars/trucks and get on our sleds?

Snowmobiles can be operated along state highways. Within a city or incorporated town, may be other rules that apply.

http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-324-82119

a snowmobile may be operated on the right-of-way of a public highway, except a limited access highway, if it is operated at the extreme right of the open portion of the right-of-way and with the flow of traffic on the highway.

If you need the definition of a highway or the right of way thereof, see the legal definitions:

And yet another snowmobiler that thinks we cant survive up here without there presence!....Cheese and rice? I think NOT I myself happen to own a business here and I choose to be here in the winter and have been for 22 long yrs. now. I have a very good job in the off season and yet I choose to do this as I enjoy the people and the sport. BUT I dont ever enjoy the threads where some think we cant survive up here without there input!! Remember this... Bergland was here LONG before snowmobiles existed and will be here LONG after they are gone! AND further more if the trend continues that very end may come sooner than most think!
