Colonoscopy - horror stories

I'm 57, my dad had colon cancer so I've had several of these procedures over the past years. No big deal. Remember, you haven't eaten anything for a day and half. The funny part is when the procedure is done the Doc will tell you to eat lightly and gradually bring your food intake up to normal. I head to Macs order two double quarter pounders with cheese, a big mac, large fries and large chocolate shake. Hows that for gradual!

I am 47 yrs. old and have had four of these procedures done already since colon cancer runs heavily on my deceased father's side. Yes, you will go through a couple trees worth of toilet paper, so a pack of Tucks or some other bung hole soothing cream is recommended.

The prep is the worse part, the procedure is a snap if sedated.

Good luck!

The nurse started to explain the procedure and discomfort and options and I stopped her and said pretty simple directions here. I do not want to know, see, feel, or remember anything-is that clear? She laughed and said all you tough guys are the same and by gosh I rolled into the room and lights were out and then woke up in the room I started with a nurse handing me a 7 up. Went for pancakes and big breakfast whe done.

Look at it this way.
It's the only time in life you take it up the wazzoo and are better off for it.
Provided they don't find anything abnormal, of course...

Procrastinated for years, and finally decided to have the procedure done because the insurance company was encouraging me to do so.
I wasn't all the nervous about it, and I'm a big baby with doctors. I opted for the Suprex prep kit, as opposed to the gallon of water. With this, you only drink 3 16 oz. glasses of water the night before, and the DAY of the procedure. The Suprex is the worst tasting sheet I've ever had in my life. Not eating and getting wiped out with fluids really gets you weak, but it's only for a day and 1/2.
The procedure itself was so easy and painless it was ridiculous I ever worried about it. The hospital I had it done at was excellent.
WHY you would ever be awake for this is a mystery to me. Why would you do this, with the option of the good anesthetics they have now days? Makes no sense, because you WILL need another one, and why would you set yourself up for a negative experience?
I also had a tortuous colon, but the doctor was able to get thru my entire colon without a problem. I had two polyps removed.
The cost was crazy - we've been getting the bills from the insurance company. Cost over 5 G's and I'll probably get hit with a few co-pays, but I'm glad I had it done.
Do it - it's better to catch problems early than end up with colon cancer.
Oh yeah, and I'm like several of these other guys - when I was done, I was so flippin hungry I went to La Fuente and had a couple of buritto's and a chimichunga - with some VERY hot sauce of course. Nothing was stopping me from eating after the six pounds I lost in prep.

Have not been on the site for a while but feel the need to comment, two things one don't take the first appointment in the moning as you need to take the prep the night before and 3 hours before the test so started after dinner took the first bottle held on tight for a few hours went to bed had to get up at 3am in the morning just to start to take the second bottle held on tight for the next couple hours deceided to take a shower. Took a good long shower felt great. Went to the basement to get a shirt out of the dryer only to find the floor drain backup because of all the toilet paper and had water over half the basement floor.
So keep that in mind if you have problems

Me too! It's like were connected :)

I had the pleasure of getting the top end done too. Just before the procedure started, I asked the Dr if we could do the top end first. Without a beat he said "Usually we can, but if for some reason we have to do the bottom end first, I will leave a breath mint on the table of your recovery room".

No breath mint and I got to sleep through the whole thing.

My hubby has both ends done at the same time also. Said if he wakes up with a sheeety taste in his mouth, he knows what end the did first! I'll send a breath mint with him next time!

How long to wipe the smile off your face? (sorry, lol )

A friend of mine who is kind of a "cranky" smart azz person had a colonoscopy done, and as they are just getting started he tells the doc, " if you find my head up there, let me,know because that where my wife tells me its located. " LOL

He said the doc was laughing so hard he about fell off his chair.
