who has had one? and did it work? also, should i get one? i'm 40 years old and don't want to get hooked on pain killers yet, there's still too much life left for that.

What is it for? Years ago, I tore my rotator cuff playing volleyball. The option to surgery was to get a series of shots. They helped me alot (then). 20+ years later, I wish I had the surgery. I still can't sleep on my right side and I have to stretch it every morning.

I can't help you with your specific case without knowing what the problem is, but I can tell you what I did.

More info would be good.

Had them in both shoulders. Yes, they help, but it's only temporary. And there is (or at least was, when I had them) a maximum amount that you could get. I think it was three.

I've had 4 cortisone shots in my left hip. I've had a ton of sports injuries including: I've broken both ankles, one leg, my back, a couple of fingers, and have two shot achillies tendons.. My left hip will feel better for about a month or so then back to the norm..I can't figure out exactly what I did to it but must be years of abuse to the body...I'm 36 yrs old and still TRY to play basketball regularly, full court with man to man defense.. I can't sit for a long time on my left side or sleep on it..Just the nature of the beast I guess..From all I've heard is that a couple of shots are fine but if they don't make it go basically away you may have a bigger problem to address.. My family doc says I'm kind of at the end of the shots for me in the hip next is to check on how do we give a fixin to it???

Hope this helps, and to boil it all down, it's a short term fix to hopefully let you heal up so that when it wears off you'll be healed up.

Thanks & good luck,

I had 1 about one year ago. for tennis elbow. it helped, and the elbow is just about 100% after wearing the brace for the last year.

As stated above they do help, But only temporary ,maybe a few months.... Ive had 4 in each heel , 3 in each elbow , 2 in left shoulder and 3 in both knees and oh yess they do hurt for about 5 min then the pain is all gone, Ive ended up with surgery for both heels knee and shoulder "yup getting old sucks" and pain pills are good for when needed, but not long term so best of luck to you in deciding on what to do .....And yes all my trouble started when i turned 40 also...To many sports as a kid and also thinking im invinciable

They are good if the issue is just inflamation. I've had them several times in my left shoulder to deal with a couple bouts of bursitis. The bursa sac becomes inflamed and the cortisone shots help clear it up. Always worked great for me! But it's one dang big needle and whne they give them to you for bursitis they try to get that sucker right in the joint. Which may mean several attempts, you feel it hitting bone, then they pull it back and try it again. No fun!

"cortizone [sic] shot"

Back in the early 1980s, after several weeks of physical therapy, while barely hobbling around with a cane and wearing a TENS unit for back pain, an MRI finally revealed that my L4 & L5 disks were at least bulging, if not actually ruptured, causing pressure on the sciatic nerve root.

I had a series of three hydrocortisone injections in the lumbar spine, a week apart. The pain was markedly lessened with each shot, finally leaving me with just the slightest sense of pain after a long day on my feet. Just enough to "keep me careful", as I used to say. So I guess that hydrocortisone treatment served me quite well for 30 years or so!

I have recently had another MRI exam, nearly 30 years later (much improved MRI equipment!), revealing some minor bulging of one or more of the lumbar disks, but no herniation, and more importantly, there is no compression of the nerve roots exiting from the spinal cord! Likewise, there is no indication of spinal stenosis.

On the other hand, an x-ray of the right hip shows significant arthritis in the ball & socket joint of the right hip, with bone-to-bone contact.

Hip replacement? No, I'm not ready for that yet! :(

frnash, Get the hip replaced. I have 2 knees replaced and I have no problem walking, hills and steps, standing, sledding. Only problem you can't ice skate or kneel in church!

Other than that you're great shape!:) I feel your pain. Back, Knees, Shoulders. It sounds like I'm on the same plan as you are.

I wouldn't of thought that after a certain age I would feel like I am falling apart. I know where you are all coming from. I feel the same way. Mostly in my knees. If somebody would have told me 10 years ago that I would feel the way I do today I would have have thought they were nuts. I guess I was wrong. When I can't ride sled or 4-wheel anymore than I will have something done.

Look at the "up side", we are falling apart together. We can make it our very own "JDee" group project. No wonder why we want our sleds to have the best suspensions and have the flatest groomed trails. UGGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!! my aching back!

Dang, you aren't that old yet. I've got you by a couple of years and still feel suprisingly good. Just last year I had an ACL replacement (tore it 20 yrs ago) in my left knee which made a world of difference for me. And as I mentioned, a couple bouts of bursits in my left shoulder. The only good thing about the bursitis is I can directly relate it to 2 incidences that caused. Unfortunately both are sledding related!

I am sure that all the down hill walking at the falls didn't help. Oh well it was too much fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat. When do ya want to go again? Not for a couple days until my knees straighten out. Getting better each day.

By the looks of this thread there would be quite a few in the group. Better go and stretch the knees they have been bent in the sitting position too long.
