Couldn't have happened......there's no cougars in the U.P........the DNR swore to that and they would NEVER lie......right?

Reading the comments was more informative than the article.

Giving the DNR absolute power to act like they know absolutely everything wildlife related is absolutely obsurd.

wait til they tangle with some children..I carry a .45 Peacemaker almost always, yardwork, ATV ect. But sort of trouble because I'm on the MI. border and their open carry laws differ from WI. especially snowmobile, boat and ATV.

That cat looks like it was eating very well! The punishment doesn't seem enough IMO.

If you want to hear a "take it for what it's worth" story.... A number of people I play cards with work for a larger Central WI trucking company. They said they shipped five cougars to the DNR in Tomahawk, WI about two months ago.

Do I believe it... probably not. But that is what they said.

Get real. move into their area and they are at fault. I am sure your joking!?! suspect that from your screen name.

There was a cougar that was killed by the DNR in Northwestern IL about 2 months ago. They are everywhere in the midwest. If there is a food source they will go to it.

IL. understands the proper way to handle a vicious beast..

"According to the DNR, there have been three confirmed cougars in Illinois between 2002 and 2008. A male was killed by a train in Randolph County in 2002. Another male was killed by a hunter in Mercer County in 2004. A third male was shot and killed on the north side of Chicago in 2008. Although analysis indicates these three animals were genetically similar to mountain lions from South Dakota, their history in the wild is uncertain"

The Police killed one in Chicago and the Offcier received death threats and hate mail. And this was nowhere near any type of wooded area, it was in a residential neighborhood. I love animals and all but I think they should stay up there. LOL

As an Environmental Biologist, not a cougar expert (not the wild ones at least) all I remember my professor and research data stating that a species will habitat an ecosystem that can provide a sustainable lifestyle, hence adapting and evolving to that ecosystem. Accordingly, many species can migrate following food supplies and if their new habitat provides enough food for life they will stay there. Pretty simple and makes sense. So is it a surprise that a cougar, bear, bobcat, wolf, etc..... will be found in locations that are not "native," of course not. There is also a big difference between a single or a couple members of a certain population and a large long sustaining population being in an area.
Lastly, dblshock stated that "IL understands..," that is hopefully the first and last time I ever hear someone say the State of IL understands anything." lol

This is a good truism and is pefectly logical. Animals will follow the food wherever it goes. While I have not the slightest fear of any of these animals which is healthy, the biggest concern you have is one that is sick and therefore much more unpredictable as to behavior around humans.

Cougars are all over the midwest and do not need any more "introduction" because they have sustainable populations of prey foods and habitat is plentiful. There is no sense in suggesting that "there is none around here" because all of the prey species will eventually be all over the midwest because they don't know any bariers to contain them.

Expect to see their numbers climb to even higher levels based upon food availability. Trail cams will capture more and more of them.

All animals will get lazy when faced with continuous handouts and if empowered to do so will force its surroundings to provide the handout as long as possible to the point it's aggressive behavior must be dealt with.

these are unpredictable carnivores our fore fathers put bounties on them for a reason..French records show thousands of humans killed by wolves prior to firearms..

The last thing you want to face alone, unarmed is a bear, wolf or cougar ambush..

and I'm not a 'gun guy'
