seems to me, and by my own encounter the far majority of these human attacks involve a pet dog..IMO if you walk a dog north of hyw 8 also carry a firearm.

The most feared animal in Africa is the 'Hunting Dog' our version is the Coyote, left unchecked they'll devour everything..Google it and add them to the list when we come to our senses and push these unpredictible carnivours out of our human range...if they don't survive, so what..that's evolution.

These guys had no right to do what they did. They will be punished accordingly. I heard a RUMOR, so take it for what it's worth, that they shot the cat, caped it out, and had it prepared to go to a taxidermist. Then blabbed it all over the place from Seney to Grand Marais what they did. IF they killed it in self defense, that's one thing. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. They dug their own grave by bragging about it.

I HAD hoped you were joking, but your persistence would indicate that not to be the case. You, sir, are a fool and a relic. I'm not a tree-hugger or anything, but I do love animals, and feel that humans are better served acting as stewards of the animal population, as opposed to eradicating entire species in order to serve our own needs.

Wolves have made a serious comeback recently...yet how many attacks on humans have been reported? How many deaths? Cougars are FAR fewer in number...you are probably statistically more likely to get hit by lightning than attacked and killed by a cougar.

The thing I find odd is, for years and years the DNR denied that cougars were in Michigan, despite sightings and reports of tracks. Now they're fining people for killing something that supposedly doesn't exist? Not saying by any means that people should kill them indiscriminately. But either they exist here or they don't. If they do, then establish some rules, regulations, and a management plan for them just like every other species out there. If they don't, well, then they don't, and somebody killing something that doesn't exist shouldn't matter (to the DNR).

Or maybe such plans are in place and I'm just behind the times in not knowing about it.

I understand what you're saying. We have had sightings of them down here in Iowa the last few years, and a couple have actually been shot and killed. It's perfectly legal here as long as you have hunting license and fur bearers permit. i am a hunter and personally I probably wouldn't kill one unless in self defense. I have to laugh at the DNR down here. If you take a deer illegally it's the "states" deer and you have to pay $$$$ to replace it. If you hit one with your vehicle and total it out, it's not the "states" deer and you're on your own. LOL.

I was going to leave this one alone but then I figured what the h***.......it's one thing for you to sit down there in IL and criticize someone hundreds of miles north as being a fool and a relic. But I can tell you one thing for absolute certain.......we have two extremely valuable dogs but even if they were curs, we still love them to death. Yes, I am armed every time I take them out because we choose to live in the forest. I don't hunt but also don't begrudge those that do. Now to the absolute......legal or not if I see a coyote, wolf or even cougar when the furry kids are outside (which means I am with them each and every time) then said animal had better be wearing body armor or disappear very, very quickly, otherwise their life expectancy is decreasing at an exponential rate. Flame away.

Now I like that attitude — mutual respect: "I will respect the predators as long as they respect me and mine"!
