The only way I know of is in the spring before the crab grass starts growing you can use a product from Scott's called "turf builder plus haltz". Not sure of anything to do this time of the year though. Good luck

Yep...you have to put down the above mentioned Scotts down early...after the frost is out of the ground to kill it. And it still might take a couple years. If you keep doing it though, you'll see it less and less every year. The stuff isn't cheap though either.

I had a horrible time with crab grass last summer. This spring I put down Scotts Turfbuilder with Halts Crab Grass Preventer. Didn't kill the crab grass that had already started but once that died off (about 3-4 weeks) I had probably less than 5 crab grass plants in the entire yard the rest of the summer so far. That stuff works amazing. I will put it down every spring for sure.

Once the ground temp gets into the 50's the seeds take hold. I put down crab grass preventer early in the spring. If you put it down too early it may not work. I would get it down in the spring as above and you should be fine.

I spray my yard in the fall and spring with either Trimec Plus or Q4 Plus. I also use fertilizer in the spring with the crabgrass treatment in it. Good luck to those who don't farm or have access to someone who does or who can get this spray because they don't sell it in any of the Wal-mart type stores. Most dealers won't sell to the general public due to the liability involved and the possibility of them losing their dealer license if someone screws up by spraying when windy or when it gets too hot. Crabgrass is hard to kill and I have had minimal luck with the treated fertilizer as a killer but it seems to work well as an inhibitor. My .02

Thunder- you need to take yourself down the road to Blanchard Valley and see what they say. Maybe they will help a brotha out on the spray but I wouldn't guarantee it. They will sell you fertilizer for the spring or fall at a cheaper price than wal-mart, menards, etc.

barricade is an excellent pre emerge product in the spring and could be followed by trimec plus or drive herbicide in the summer. The barricade in the spring should give season long control though.

Key word here is pre-emergent products.

Crabgrass goes to seed every fall. The old plant dies out...that's the straw looking stuff left behind, and the seeds begin anew in the spring. If you are NOT putting down grass seed, which most crabgrass pre-emergent materials will also prevent from germinating, then any of the pre-emergent products will do a good job.

Reason why scotts works well is because you introduced fertilizer to perk up the grass that is already growing and crowds out the spots where the crabgrass would soon be growing if you didn't 't put down germination preventer.

Of course...in this chemically induced society, you might find that you pet's paws track this stuff in the house...not to mention the kids and YOUR big feet...I suspect that any of this stuff is not very good for you to be breathing and running around bare toed....

Therefore, you might want to get out there NOW and pull the crabgrass up bagging it and putting it out to the curb before the seed releases....this is better than a trip to the doctor because of "strangitus" to the toes, or a membership to th gym with lots of bending and bagging. But think how nice the lawn will look when your dun...and the money you saved on chemicals and the grubs and moles will thank you too.

Another trick to keep in mind. Plant grass seed now. With all this rain, it should take off pretty good. Crabgrass likes to grow in the sun, so leave your lawn longer next year.

Keep the bluegrass long and thick to crowd out the crabgrass. These lawncare companies all like to use chemicals to control crabgrass. I like to use grass seed.

We also have a dedicated inspection team that watches diligently for little shoots of crabgrass.:p

There was someone else from that area that posted awhile back I'm confusing you with, I think he did concrete work. sorry bout that. Good luck with the crabgrass. GO BUCKS!

Crabgrass Herbicides

Here are some products that may work for you:
*Weed B Gone (triclopyr) works on clover and crabgrass. The label says it works on creeping charlie, but I just sprayed and didn't see much control.
*Fertilome Weed Free Zone -- my neighbor just sprayed this and had good control of crabgrass and creeping charlie. May be hard on your grass, so only spray when it is cool and wet and grass isn't stressed.
*Trimec Plus -- I've been using this for a while, and it kills crabgrass and other weeds. Takes a few applications 10 days apart to knock back creeping charlie, but it keeps coming back.
I use 2x the recommended dose, and these are my results.
Good luck!
