deadly accident on trail 3 this past sunday morning?

I know some folks that were there on the scene to assist and from what I gather, she stopped her sled, got off and was hit by not one, but two sleds.

I was not there and am not going to pass judgement on anyone, but I just cannot fathom how this could happen.

Totally unfathomable - 1 of 3 possibilities, excessive speed, driver impairment (drug), or stopped on trail in bad position. Prayers to the family - I can't even imagine seeing this with kids present.

Unfortunately this was my cousins wife Denise that was killed. She was there with my cousin Rick and their two kids. I have been over by him each of the last 2 days since they have been home. There are lots of questions and not many answers. Maybe there will never be. This is what I know. Rick was riding in the lead with his daughter, son , and wife behind. He came to a stop sign I believe and when he looked back only his daughter was behind him. They waited for a period of time and then turned around like any of us would do. Upon heading back, the other two were making there way. We know now there was an issue with the sled his son was riding and they had fallen behind. Rick signaled for them to pull over to the side and stop, and he would turn around so they could continue. Before he could turn around there was a group of sleds coming at him from the front. He waited for them to clear and then started to turn around. At that point all he saw was sleds piling up. He got off the machine and ran to the scene. Denise had been struck and killed. He has no idea how it happened. The sleds were parked all of the way off to the right side, and her son was on his sled in front of hers. From what I understand this was a long straight area. I have been riding for 20 years and just cannot understand how it could of happened? How do you not see 2 sleds parked on the side going down a straight? With the trails as wide as they are why would you ever be that close when passing? Why would you be going passed someone fast enough to be able to kill them? I am trying not to pass judgement on anyone as well, but I just cannot make sense of it.

Sorry for your loss, eagle 17.

seeing your cousin was waiting to turn around, I would think he gave some sort of hand signal to the oncoming group of sleds....I wonder if the lead guy slowed and was rearended, the way it sounds with multiple sleds involved.

I am so sorry for her family. This is heartbreaking and from the little information I have sounds senseless.

This goes back to the common courtesy thread. When you see other sleds ,especially on a straight stretch slow down and use caution. I saw countless times on trail #3 from Twin Lakes and north where you could see a group coming the other way for a mile or so and they didn't slow down when we met or use any such caution. I got crowded several times from riders just keeping it pinched as they passed. It only takes a few bad eggs to ruin things for everyone. Unfortunately whoever this was ruined a whole family. We also had a group of off trail boondockers who were playing in the powder off trail #3 just north of Painsdale and just South of South Range cut across our trail perpendicular. Our lead guy was cruising at trail speed and this guy just cuts across in front of him just missing him by inches. I have been riding up there for 15 years running and this year and last year I saw a lot of stuff that made me wonder if many of these people have just gotten into the sport.

It's impossible to make sense of something so senseless. It's pretty obvious whoever caused this was nowhere near in control of their sled. Here is a fact....people need to slow the he*^ down!! To be traveling so fast as to be able to take a life when other sleds are around...there is no rational explanation . Thoughts and prayers to the family.

Our thoughts a prayers go out to the family.

We rode in that area this past weekend and to use snow dust as a reason why this happened is a coop out. When snow dust occurs you spread out far enough apart so you can see and react. If you are riding in someone's snow dust and cannot see them you are riding to close and in my opinion riding carelessly. To many "Tucker Hibbert" types think then can ride on each others tails, on the edge of control, with no care for other people. When you ride like this there is no reaction time and people get hurt.

X2... Exactly why I always slow way down passing oncoming sleds... if stopped... I stop & ask if everything ok & I don't proceed until thumbs up. I ride alone a lot so would want someone to do the same for me if stopped. No idea why another rider would charge by an oncoming or stopped sled just stupid and an accident waiting to happen. So sorry this happened soooo sad..

Condolences to you and your cousins family Eagle 17!
What a terrible tragedy! You have such great thoughts going out on a nice family ride for a Sunday trip thinking it is safer, and this happens!!?? What a terrible memory for the kids and husband! Hopefully, some answers and charges come forth to help the pain! Unfortunately, you see the trail jockeys not using common sense way too often, even when they know other sleds are coming the opposite direction!
Prayers and thought to the family!

X3, I do the same. There is a thread on DooTalk about hand signals to use them or not. While I use them when permitted. I always slow do for approaching sleds. I'm surprised at the number of sledders that ride balls to the wall even when there are other sleds present.

eagle17 ..... sorry for your loss, prayers to you and your cousin.
