Disappointed in Snowy Range Trip (2/25-2/27/11)

FCG, yep! When the talk of going to the Snowies started for us back in October, I went to snowest.com and started reading. I had never been there before, but before we got there, I already knew what to expect. I told my buds, we have to get to the other side, and get in the trees if it is blowing, and it probably will be. LOL. So that is what we did. Going across Libby flats in near whiteout conditions, isn't very much fun. LOL

Your first mistake was probably not going with a guide regardless of weather, second bringing non-mountain sleds (assuming yours are not). We went to Togwotee for the first time this year and had what I would assume were pretty tame conditions and I couldn't Imagine doing it without a guide in those conditions much less in bad conditions. For our group the first two days were spent just getting used to things like elevation and the difference in riding. My first day was absolutely brutal on me physically, which Lefty can personally attest to :) if we had been out there without a guide I think I would still be there. Don't let one bad trip keep you from going out west again, now you know what to do different. If we had gone without a guide and the right equipment I may be saying the same thing right now, but by our third day I was hooked. Looking back we should have gone longer as 3 days was barely enough. Especially the first time because the first 2 days you are just getting adjusted. I can't wait to go back and would have lefty as a guide every time, he can have as many "union guide breaks" as he needs because I'm sure we would get stuck a ton again. And as far as riding the trails to see some of the scenery as Lefty told us "why would you go all the way to wyoming just to ride the trails". One more thing if you plan on flying out the next time don't go to denver. Fly to Jackson, Togwotee will pick you up at the airport and drive you to the lodge.

Did it look like this across Libby Flats? Pretty common.

That is actually pretty clear for Libby flats from what I seen of it.

I have read many posts on here about how awesome it is to ride out west. I just got back and have to say that I was disappointed in our trip. The disappointment is primarily related to the weather while we were there. White out conditions and getting stuck repeatedly are not my idea of a good time. When you can not see the terrain or the trail, things fall apart very quickly. We arrived last Thursday night, rode Friday, Saturday and Sunday (2/25-2/27). Friday was Ok. Saturday sucked and Sunday started out with blue skies and no wind which did not last for long. Finally, we were able to see the mountains and take some cool photos. On Friday, we rode from the Green Rock Parking Area to Albany lodge and back. Did some off trail riding but the trail itself was pretty rough. On Saturday we tried to to cross over the using O and U and it was just horrible. You could not see 10 feet in front of you. On Sunday, we made it from the Green Rock Parking Area to The Place Bar & Cafe for food. On the way back over, it started snowing and the winds came back. You could barely see the next trail marker crossing Libby Flats. On Sunday night we found out that a group got split up and one of the guys did not make it down off the mountain. The were setting up search and rescue to try and find him on Monday morning. They said the winds were blowing 90 mph up on the mountain. They were blowing so hard in Centennial you did not want to go outside.

I don't think I will be going back any time soon. I think the powder riding and views were incredible but the weather can change on a dime. We only had 4-5 hours of good weather out of 3 days of riding. When you only go on 2-3 trips a year, I do not want to waste a trip dealing with weather conditions that can make the trip completely suck. I will stick to the U.P. where blizzards don't just blow up out of nowhere. I realize the U.P. may not have the powder that the Snowy Range has but at least I will have a good idea that the conditions will be on the trip. I may go back out west but not anytime soon.

this past wednesday morning at the warming hut

Snowies

Ya i cant imagine not going out there. we have had days that we woke to 3ft of over nite snow and man did that suck......ya right. just back from our 3rd trip this year and have two more planned. i would never recommend going your first couple times out there without a guide. call up snowy range tours those guys are awesome to ride with they know that mountain like no ones business and they are real sick riders no matter which one of them takes you out. they grew up on that hill. Go Back out and change what you didnt like. The weather is easy to dodge if you know where to go and when. Libby Flats isnt always bad.But when its bad its bad. In the years we have been going out there i can say it sounds like you have been more places then we have made it to. Heck we cook on the hill. just start a fire and cook some sausages and cheetos with gatorades and your set never even looked for a lodge or a place to eat when riding out of Green rock. give it another shot.

No doubt about it, get a guide. Went to Tog and had a great guide everyday and had an awesome experience. Note that most recommend carrying survival and first aid gear with you. White outs and getting lost can happen anywhere, even in the UP. When Mr. Murphy shows up with Mother Nature, you have to be prepared everywhere you go. Even when I am in central wisconsin I carry all my gear...and I have used some of it because someone else needed it or "forgot" or did not think they needed it. P.s. the snowies sound awesome!

Flying in to Togwotee makes it easy. Airport shuttle to lodge or cabin. Rent sleds $200 bucks a day. top dollar $2000 for 5 nights and four days riding and lots of food. I would not go anywhere else but Togwotee. We R looking at buying our own mountain sleds, but it becomes a question about dollars. With the $200 a day in rental that includes registration and a full tank of gas and oil everyday, so, now you are looking at $150 a day.

Just go to Togwotee and get a guide.

You are not required to go with a guide though. The guides know of some of the best spots we could not find.

Nice season! With all that riding you might as well just keep following the snow line north and try for a full year. I hear B.C. is nice in August-lol:D

Firecatguy, I'm guessing I will see you out there. We are leaving with Mom's Motorsports on Friday night. I think Rick told me we had like 30 some guys going out so I have a feeling you are hooking up with Mom's as well. When I pulled up the weather this morning, Centennial Wy showed 1 to 3 inches today and 5 to 9 tonight. This week can't get over fast enough.
