Apparently, you are too ignorant to read a map. My group took advantage of the 200,000+ acres of public land in Houghton County.
I do respect the land, public and private. I agree that off trail riding in areas clearly posted is deplorable. However, public lands in the UP are a place where many enthusiasts can enjoy and if you do your homework you to can find places to hide out.
What I meant by "what harm is done" is that under that 4' of snow, is likely a rutted out path from summer time ORV's, creating sediment runoff. Sleds tracks thru the snow on top of a previously made path will have zero impact on the grounds beneath them. I am a land owner and understand that if it bothers me, I have to take the steps to protect it which in some cases means legally posting it.
Additionally, my opinion is that a large percentage of locals ride mountain sleds. Do you think they are riding the trails? They are going places with deep snow. They may know of these areas from years of following and being told where to go or they studied plat maps and google earth.

So you didn't once cross from state or township land onto private land? And "CFA" land in the plat book is NOT public and is NOT open to snowmobiles....
Even if it isn't posted it is still TRESPASSING. You are still in the wrong and it gives the whole sport a bad image.
If locals jumped off a bridge would you follow them? Locals illegally trespass just the same at out of towners...
Well it comes down to RESPECT, I have a section of my trail that goes thru some gardens and all the owner asks is to keep off the gardens, and as much as I sign it and fence it, every year idiots cut the corners and go where they wish, I have alot of people wanting to close my trail that are not land owners of the trail but neighbors who are trying to get my trail close due to the LOUD PIPES,, I've done everything to quiet them down, but these idiots come thru late hours at night and rev there machines, WHY? Really? I've worked very hard for years to keep this trail open and the next time one of the owners or I have a complaint, its going to get closed. Wisconsin had a good idea on doubling the registration fee's and trail passes for non-club members which hasn't gone thru yet, but all of the club members in all the states who bust our asses every year working on trails and smoothing things over with landowners, wish they all would and triple them. Maybe you can't get a trail pass unless you put in some time and belong to a club. maybe the cure for off trail riding is alot of barbwire fencing.

Why should locals have to incur the expense of posting their property? They already pay property taxes for the right to exclusive use of their land.

In MI, landowners do not have to post their land in order for uninvited persons on their property to be trespassers and were thus within the law of the land for their area. So if you are going to demand that the landowners abide by local laws, it should only be fair that you know the local laws of where you are going to be riding and abide by them, right?

i guess when u get every snowmobile in minn wis and the up all into one peninsula you cant stop idiots from being idiots. lucky for some of us that know the best snow and riding terrain isnt usually anywhere near there.

(some of) the northerner come to our lakes and leave trash and go into coves and tear the still waters up and do not care that they are tearing up our boats that are tied up. I am sure you all have the same thing at your lakes. These people never had their parents put a shoe up you know where when they acted up when they were younger. There is a saying "that we have kids raising kids now". Just my .02 worth. Have fun in your snow that you all had to wait so long for. Maybe next year we can come p and enjoy your snow.

Plat book was the first snowmobile related purchase I made once I decided I was coming up here, couldn't even imagine riding without it.

so what you are saying is that if its not posted no trespassing that you can ride anywhere? you all can be mad at what I'am about to say but here it go's. How about all off trail riding(unless you own the land)is trespassing. This may just be my thoughts here but it is my opinion that the reason we had so much trouble with people riding off trail in southern wisconsin when we had the 1 big snow this year was because people that where use to riding up north where off trail riding is allowed.
Good parenting vs. bad parenting. Too many jerks raising more jerks. Dont like your kids look in the mirror. Broken family not an excuse either as each side still has the responsibility to raise good members of society.

There just needs to be a map made by the state that clearly defines the areas that are legal to ride off trail. It sucks because it makes it more announced to those who have kept off trail riding quiet and to themselves, but this is the only way people will know to legally go. This is the only obvious answer besides don't ride if you don't know whose or what land you are on.

[I am confused? I could be wrong but I am pretty sure in years past it has come up that riding power lines is illegal? The lines have easements from private land owners to cross there land and allow power company employees access to maintain the lines. SO riding power lines is crossing private property at times not always, but it is trespassing and is illegal. SO on this thread you are high and mighty talking about your plat books and homework and other people wrecking it for us. YET on the keweenaw thread under current conditions YOU talk about riding the power lines AND taking others with you. IS THIS NOT THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK?
