YES!!! In my local town, if I were to take a poll of cops I've passed, 3 out of 4 have their eyes down on the laptop!

I know a captain here, and without being a jerk, asked him about it. He told me with a smirk on his face - we are professionals. Then he went on to tell me they don't use radios anymore, everything comes in on the computer, and they pay attention to it closely. Ok, I get that. So I ask him about the cop that's swerving back and forth through one of the 50mph S-curves in our community, and he didn't have an answer for that. Of course not! Its because he's not looking out the windshield!

Unreal!!! But that's the world we live in now. I agree with most of everything on this thread. The punishment is not near what it should be for this. snobuilder is right on it for sure!!!

It is foolish to suggest a different set of rules based on good drivers and bad drivers. I hope you were kidding. The roads are designed for the masses. The speed limits are designed for the masses. It is stupid easy to get a drivers license in the US of A. If you lived in Germany it takes a lot more time and effort to get a drivers license. They take it much more seriously. There are also countries like Sweden that if you get one DUI you are done driving for life. The easiest thing to do here would be to make cell phones and laptops deactivate when a vehicle is in motion. If your vehicle has a hands free phone fine. Use that. Most vehicles with on board GPS wont let you do extensive functions without stopping.
In MN there is one speed limit for snowmobiles. 50 makes sense on tight trails. 50 makes no sense on lakes or groomed ditches where you can see for 10 miles. However it is the law. It is basically there to protect inexperienced riders more than anything. One size fits all. I will not get a pass even if I have been riding for 50 years. I have not piled up a sled since 1986. Experience and good driving habits do not get rewarded.

exactly why i dont ride in MN anymore..and if MI puts one in..im done with sledding for good

When I was a younger buck and had a 90 minute commute home, I would stop at the store and pick up the ingredients and then get most of my dinner made on the way home. Then just pop it into the oven upon arrival. Great time saver!

Got the idea from Kramer on Seinfeld making a salad while he took his shower.

Alla this tech and still no microwave inda dash?....figured a UP Pasty zapper would be on da lowest level Chevy Sonic by now!

I like the equal punishment - same end results- people injured or killed-
I feel even less safe on my mc than than before -
I have gone to 50-50- tires on my street bike and ride mostly back roads and gravel and min maintenance roads, not really because of texting or drunk drivers, it's just fun! I rode the atv trails in the UP last summer with reg street tires and it worked ok but the 50-50 tires will work much better-

Distracted driving, how about just stupid! Trail 8 outside Munising this Saturday caught up to a guy doing 80. Going along when he applies the brakes hard and immediately proceeds to do a u turn without looking back. ****! I hit brakes and pass on bank of trail in front of sled. Spouse passes behind the idiot also riding the bank. We both look back and he sheepishly waves at us. Decided to just leave instead of dragging him off the sled and giving him a well deserved face wash in a snow bank. He was riding an almost brand new Polaris RMK. I doubt he paid for it, or he'd have cared more about what he did.

O you all are forgetting women putting on make-up while driving. Honestly I'd rather deal with the drunks then all the smart phones.

"I'd rather deal with the drunks (first) then all the smart phones."?

Then vs. than: A common mistake, though I never understood why I see it so often, among many highly educated intelligent folks too.

Remember this and you'll never make that mistake:

Then rhymes with when, and answers that question.
The other one (than) is the comparative.

(I read "Munising, Grand Marais, and Seney Conditions" first, and I guess your challenge there set me up for this!) :smug:

If I am doing 80, I wouldn't be worried about someone trying to catch me and riding my butt!!! If you and your spouse choose to "catch" ppl doing 80 on the grade you need to be more responsible in where you position yourself.....chit IMO....you should get brake checked cuz yur just bein a dangerous d1ck at that point.

Nah, that's 2 more hours of riding. And if it makes some of the pin it to the bar crowd go to the UP, I'm good with that too.

In all seriousness, its not that big of a deal. At least for me its not - I really have no desire to fly down a rail grade at any speed really. I find that to be boring.
