.....minus those stupid biting flies and skeeters big as birds!? ;)

Them there are the biggest reasons I haven't spent any appreciable time in da Yoop during the warm months since I was 8 years old. The cold and snow are fine; bugs are not.

Then there's always the cost of hauling a fifth wheel all that way while getting 8-9 mpg....but with retirement looming and a diesel now sitting in the driveway, time should no longer be a factor and hopefully fuel economy will be improved! :)

my family bought a house in White Pine about 32 years ago and have been going there ever since, we go up all the time. summer vacations where the best i logged so many miles on my bikes, atv's, and sleds,, i rode more back when i was 13 then i do now, kinda sad lol.

i am new to this forum but a long time reader of JD after reading some post it was kinda surprising how many people are from n. IL and go to WP

It's early in the poll but I'm surprised that the multi-season votes have a huge lead over "winter only". I guess it makes sense in that many of the members still actively contributing to this board would be the most likely have an interest in the U.P. beyond the sledding season. It would be interesting to conduct this same poll in late January.

Sorry, over-analyzing the data again. Good poll though.

I agree completely, I was thinking about that as I was putting this up. I will save the data at some point next week and we can compare the results from next winter.

Visiting DA UP in non winter months

Scott B

I would have to agree with you, having a place on Gogebic for the last 5 years and visiting for 8, I am amazed how quiet the area is in the Spring and Summer. Compared to Northern WI(Eagle river, 3 lakes) just a 45 minute drive away, the lakes and towns are packed with people.

I admit though, the lack of traffiic/on the road or the lake are part of the reason why I enjoy it so much!

So, yah, stay away da bugs R big and bring a nasty bite! LOL

See ya in da UP Scott! I met U a few years back at Scott H's house, you may recall.

Nytro, every other weekend in the spring, summer and fall and every weekend in the winter? From Byron? You are my hero. We have a place in the UP and think we are doing well if we make it up there a dozen times per year.

How many miles do you put on a car/truck per year?

Scott, Yes, we try to get up everyother in none snow months and every in winter months. It don't always happen but for the most part it does, altho this winter was alot diferent with the terrible winter we had. Also in the winter I try to make everyother weekend a longer one if I can get away from work.

Never look at yearly milage but I put on about 40,000 - 45,000 miles on between my two trucks last year(not all from going north, I put on alot for work also) and I didn't keep track on my car or my wifes suv & car.

We love the UP!!!!

Use to come up to the UP just in the winter months (on the boys trips)..One year no snow in Wis. so the wife came to the UP to sled-back for summer-back for fall colors- back to sled-back to look at a house-back to see if the mosquito is still for sale- back to sled & sign contract... Well here we are. Its the only place to be for us.

Hey Todd,

I do remember meeting you at Scott's place. Things have changed significantly (in a good way) for us since then with the addition of a couple of kids. I can't help but find it funny that Scott's Kelsey is getting ready for college and my Kelsey was just born. Can't wait to show the kids all there is to enjoy in the UP.
Hopefully we will run into you this summer.

dewright, welcome to the forum. Always good to see another victim, I mean member, join the fray.

I have also noticed that there seems to be a high (but not necessarily unhealthy) concentration of Illinois faithful with a second residence in the Western U.P.

All right Illini, whats up with WP and the Western U.P.? - and don't forget to vote!

skiroul - Simple economics for us. Bigdaddy's family had a cabin in the northwoods of WI since the 20's - bigdaddy's dad let the cabin and all of it's waterfront property go for a song. Can't afford to buy in Northwoods. White Pine has nice little houses for a nice little affordable price. Plus, the snow (well not this past winter!) Plus, 6 miles away from the shores of Lake Michigan and 12 miles away from Gogebic. Can't lose.

Very wise approach - I don't think I like Bigdaddy's dad.

Skiroule - It was hard to not put bigdaddy's dad on the permenant sh!7 list for that one. I won't get into the numbers but he was complaining about the taxes and he could have sold off a parcel of the proprerty and paid for the taxes through MY kid's lifetimes...bad business move if nothing else. And bigdaddy had spent a few weeks that summer filling up the wood shed and it got sold in October. Ouch!

I've always loved the Northwoods and the UP...different in their own ways...I was excited about the WP house for snowmobiling but am equally as excited to be able to go any other time.

The summers in the keweenaw are beautiful. I like the slightly cooler weather compared to Chicago, the camping, the ATVing, the big lake, and all the little lakes. We have had some great times up there. The last 2 winters have been below average, so I try making up the lost time in the summer.

Looking out at the cold, gray sky and then looking at these pics is not helping my focus today.

I think you just scored a couple of more votes for summer....

That trip was awesome, Pat. I think I snagged another one or two to join us this summer. I might bring my wife too. Now all we gotta do is have Chad get a 30 foot pontoon boat for all of us to take a ride on.

Firecat- you have the pic with the Krupp's strudel too! :)

Am sure bigdaddy will be happy to get the Harley up there this summer, my 13 yr old will be happy to get his dirt bike on some trails and I'll be happy to have the top off the Jeep for some summer time fun.
