I've always loved the Northwoods and the UP...different in their own ways.

wtg - How's this for a delayed response? In my opinion you're spot on with this one. Northern Wisconsin is just plain beautiful but the U.P. seems to have that rugged edge that is unique to the area.

White Pine is actually a good spot for a home base. You could go east, you could go west, it's all up to you to decide (sorry, paraphrasing Bob Seger here). My introduction to the U.P. was through downhill skiing and I've hit all of the Ironwood areas but I have a special fondness to the Porcupine Mountains - love the Porkies!

A few years back, 40 acres adjacent to the Indianhead ski area was for sale for less than a $1000 an acre. Fabulous view of the Porcupine mountains. I still think about that land.

Never been to Black River Harbor but I think there is still a trail in that direction. Hope to get there some day - maybe when I make my previously unplanned trip this summer:)

We have been going to the up since 1999. We bought our small camp in Ishpeming on 30 acres in the winter 2000 -2001. That was the year Marquette area recieved 320 inchs of snow. We try to go once a month. I think about the up everyday. We have made alot of friends in the up . My goddaughter lives in Ishpeming. Im studying to build a log cabin myself . That project will hopefully happen in 36 to 48 mos. Im going to use the methods from the Montana log building school . The small cabin on our land now is 130 years old and was in a cemetary in Ishpeming. It was moved to this spot in the 40s by horse and buggy. My dream is to build the cabin and teach people how to do it themselves , and build small camps on peoples property.

Nice pics, Skylar and Lenny!

And skiroule - we got in some nice skiing this winter! Well, my 3 boys all snowboard and bigdaddy skis - I hang out in the bar on JD or read a book!? :) It was sad to look at the trails but the ski hills were always nice and white!

It always strikes me how empty the UP is during the summer and while I enjoy the quiet times up there I do feel for the business owner's who struggle to keep the doors open.

For those of you that don't come up in the summer or fall, what is keeping you away?

Note: can someone please correct the spelling of "seasons" in the poll?

I live in the Marquette/Ishpeming area, and love the summers as much as the winters. Being in the atv/snow business I can say it is no quieter in the summer than the winter. Maybe the transistion months it's quieter, but that is when people are planning and getting ready for either snowmobiling, or atv/utv riding. Minimal gated trails in summer = lots of riding. Happy riders. :)
