Does anyone have a Mastiff?

We are going to start looking for a pup for my boys as we lost our yellow lab last summer to some freak medical probs. We are considering labs again but I would also like to look at a Mastiff.

No real reason but I really like their size and looks. I know they get big and slobber all over but that's fine here. We have some nice acreage and can have them out and about quite a bit.

Anyone have any insight as far as temperment or tips?

My buddy has a male. He only slobbers after drinking water. He is the biggest baby i've seen. He's great with his kids. Good luck

When I was in a rescue group I used to go with an animal control officer to 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms to teach animal kindness, she had a Mastiff and a Boston terrier and I had a very special kitty. These 3 animals were amazing to be able to turn them loose in a classroom. This mastiff was such a gentle giant! Super with other animals, children really anything my kitty could walk right on her. The only thing that made the kids squeal was when she shook her head and the drool/goobers would fly everywhere!! It was big gooey stuff and it would stick to things like walls, ceilings, kids heads and so on and it was hard to wipe up/off too. So if you can deal with that, she was a great kind dog! I always looked forward to our classroom days with her!

my neighbor's kid had one great dog but only lived like 6.5yrs.
hard to buy for a family unless your kids will be old enough to understand and you think in 5to8 you will be ready for what you just went through in that time.
I am a firm believer in the Hinze 57 rescue. have had few pure bread's and they all had way more health issues than my Mexican street mixes.thousends of good dogs being put down every day no buy fault of there own just iresponable DB owners

I got a female mixed with a lab..very dominate mastiff..she weighs about 120 and is a little over a year old....very good dog and great with the kids...she is just NOW realising she is 120 lbs cus there isnt nothing more awakeing then having a dog jump on you at full run cus she saw that little poodle do it...but that is a different story. She gets along great with all my dogs. She does eat a lot..a lot more then i expected. I went with a mix cus i dont need full bloods and after i got her i found on the net that mastiffs are not meant to he outside in extreme hwat or cold...i watch her very close and she loves being outside all the time and i think the little longer hair help. Oh did i say she eats a lot...so be prepaired. One other thing i have noticed is her stool is very smelly. Have been around dogs from day one and would have to say can not remember a dog in 40 plus years that has ever had stool that stunk like this. I have a buddy with a full mastiff and he said the same on his also...she does like and need atention. If i didnt have other dogs i think she would be more rambunchoius when i am at work. Do not know or met anyone with a mastiff that didnt say they love kids..just watch em cus they dont know there size at first....anr oh ya did i say they eat a lot!!!!!

I agree, look into Petfinder.com and you will be amazed what you can find. There are purebreds, mixes of all types. And you are finding your best friend and giving them a 2nd chance. Most rescue dogs have gone thru the puppy stage, up to date on shots and have been "fixed". You will know what size they will be. You have to realize they do have "baggage" and often they can't tell you what their past was. Talk with the foster parents, they know their personality. And don't be surprised if they want to do a home visit, I do those for Dobe rescue. We want our dogs to go to 4ever homes and not returned for some stupid reason the adopters forgot to realize.
I have a friend that has a Mastiff, great dog,plan on a big pooper scooper tho. He weighs 190lbs!

we had to drive from MN to Nebraska to pick him up she did not want to ship him so I picked my battle and started driving.
well he is hands down the best dog I have owned took about 6mo for his full personality to come out.
a good way to find a rescue you may want is to foster but be prepared to want to keep every one that comes to your home.
would not be at all surprised to find some less than 1yr old mastiffs in shelters lots of DB who buy puppys and dump them when they get big.
one lives in my neighborhood we have had many words but some blockheads just will never get it.
the local shelters wont let him drop dogs any more.
don't know who took them but a few puppy's in the last few yrs were taken from his yard when tied out all night and given to better homes

Found mine off of craiglist actually..was a free dog cuz I never pay $$ for dogs...only food/shots/etc.etc.etc...but I did drive about 4 hours one way to pick her up...most I have ever traveled for a dog but was worth every bit of it...well except the fact that at that time she was 70 plus pounds and though she could fit in my shirt pocket cuz she spent that whole ride home tryin to crawl in it...not to mention she somehow figured out how to clean my left ear with her tounge via my right ear....lol... I have two neighbors with them. One is 125lb and I think the other is around 130-140lb, they are HUGE.
The one neighbor just got a new one that looks similar to this. It has more pronounced stripes, reminds
me of a tiger but it looks awesome.

I had a neo mastiff. He was a a great dog 160 lbs very loyal and a gentle giant with those he knew. A good watch dog and good with my kids. He did have a rather short life of 8 yrs.

We have a Cane Corso Mastiff, (pronounced conny corso) and he is the ABSOLUTE best dog! He loves everyone, esp. kids. Very even tempered, he is a big baby, scared to death of thunderstorms. He has a heck of a 'woof' when he wants to. He's a rescue, so we guess him to be about 9yrs old. Weighs 120 lbs. Wish I could figure out how to post a picture of him, but I have one on my profile. Good luck!

I had a friend in Illinois that had 3 of them. Not a one lived over 5 years although one did get squashed by a bus
