my friend

We got a pound black lab,she had been an a chain forever. We got her to the farm and when she wa aclamated as to where home was we let her roam free. She would run a short distance and put her head down and expect the chain to jerk. After she figured out that she could follow me around the farm she would always be near me. Unless it is extreamly cold she will wait outside the repair shop (she hates the noises) for hours for me to go somewhere. When I mow she finds some shade in the area I am at then when I move on so will she. She has listened to my troubles and never gossiped to anyone. Her health is fadeing and I wonder when I will have to make a very difficult decision. I pray I will be spared that difficulty. My Molly is such a loyal friend!

Some great stories here about our best friends. Snowmobiles and dogs rock but the backyard will need a little attention before we re-freeze!!!

As I read these posts it sounds like it is not so much if you leave your dog outside, in a kennel, or inside. It is more how the dog is treated. Irregardless of an inside dog or outside dog, they all need fresh water (not green) they need attention by their owners, they need excercise (we take our dogs on 1-2 walks per day) and they need food. In general if a dog is in a kennel for a period of time that does not constitute dog abuse. But if the dog is in a kennel with no fresh water, or food, is neglected by the owner and has no ability to get out of the hot sun or cold if they want or need to, that is dog abuse. Same thing goes if they are not in a kennel. With our dogs we have the invisable fence. In fact we have two: one for our main residence and one for our cabin. At our main residence we have about 1 1/2 acres of lawn so we wanted to be able to let the dogs roam the whole yard. If the dogs are trained properly they will receive no more than 2-3 shocks and that is it. After the training if they get too close to the fence line they hear the beeping sound and will get back before they receive a shock. Now if they are not properly trained and the dogs just continue to get shocked, to me that is abuse. So I guess what I am saying is that abuse can come in many different ways.

Polarisrider1- Nice looking dogs. I had a Boston Terrier growing up. They are great dogs. Seeing that picture of them on the boat made me laugh because our dogs (a Havanese and Westie) Love being on our boat. When we are at our cabin their favorite thing to do is go for a boat ride.

I know. This sucks. We had plans of snowmobiling this weekend. First weekend in a while that our daughter did not have anything going on. Go figure. I like being on the boat but not until May!

With the products that are available to train and contain your dog there is really no need for any dog to be tied to a chain. We have 2 collies and have the Petsafe containment system that is wireless. They were trained within a couple of days and stay in the yard. However, they have the run of our house also. When we arent home and at nite they sleep in our laundry room which is a huge room. Their kennels are down there and water and all I have to say is go to your room and off they go. They know there is a treat for them waiting.
I have always felt that a dog left outside all the time is an unhappy dog especially those tied to a chain. Now I know there are some exceptions to thats such as farm dogs and some hunting dogs but I think a dog needs to feel like part of the family.

My yard looks like chocolate chip ice cream since the big meltdown. She has 10 acres to do her business, but likes to keep it close to home. Gotta love it!

I was VP of a rescue group in IL and have seen it all!! We rescued some Bear dogs from the U.P. back in the early 90's we watched these dogs for 2 years they were chained up, burried in snow, no water, no food, collars grown into there necks and we finely just took loaded them up and headed for IL. We had to do surgery on one to remove the collar it was awful. But they had homes waiting for them and they ended up with good lives
We have 2 rescue dogs, one locked in a closet for the first 5months of her life, she is 13 now and has always had issues from her start in this world but we love her to death. The other was taken from a man who went to jail the poor dog ended up in a shelter in a kennel unable to be touched for 90days because he was in the court system he was a huge 9month old germem shephard after he got released to be adopted he was just crazy, couldn't handle him at all, no one who came to the shelter wanted to adopt him cause he was crazy from being un touched or let out of a 6x4 kennel for 3 months and the shelter had a 30day the kill policy he was at the end and going to be put down, when someone called our rescue group knowing I had a thing for shephards and asked if we would take him. Our group said yes, so he arrived, I went to the vet where the intake process started I put him on a 30ft lead and took him for a 5 mile walk and run and he has never left me since. He's a great dog and I'm so glad we got him!! When he came home the first thing this BIG sad dog did was jump on the couch and lay down it broke our hearts, he musta had a good life before the shelter. Animals end up is such bad places and need us to help them, report report report and save their lives

And talk about chips in the back yard LOL we have pies big ones

At least the "chocolate chips" are in the yard, you should see my deck!!!!

I feel for ya. I now go out with my dobe and follow her around, she is old and has trouble getting around since everything is iced over from the meltdown. BUT maybe snow on the way to cover this icey crap( and dog crap)

Snow Monkey that is a squirrel. They live to chase the squirrels. This time of year the squirrel chasing gets them knee deep in the mud. They are a mess after 5 min outside so they aren't getting much roam time in the yard.
Mrs Running bear.... you are awesome for saving those poor dogs!!
