drilled 7 holes in my heat exchanger today

hi just wondering if you guys have ever fixed holes on heat exchangers. i was installing a seat, board supports, a tail light, and a luggage rack on my brand new summit today and i drilled up the damn heat exchanger again! the holes range from 1/4 inch up to 5/8 inch and some of them go all the way thru both sides. when i was all done i realized i was standing in decent amount of water but didnt really think it was anything real major. then when i started it up i realized cause my new parts were all sprayin out green. any ideas???

you can weld them but sounds like the ones u trashed would prob be a bit more ez to unrivet and replace.
if u weld I am sure your welder knows but u need to take the ecu off sled or unplug if only screwed in to plastic.
no antifreeze can be on holes clean well .
have had a few welded in my day but usually the fr exchanger from studs flying through.

Buy a new heat exchanger, welding it might cause restrictions in the flow of the coolant. With that many holes, you can definitely melt the motor down without free flowing coolant.

One or two, not so much, but 7, your asking for trouble.

Props for admitting this. Go buy a new one.

I would use some jb weld and hold it in place with some duct tape. JB weld won't restrict flow. I know a shade tree mechanic that fixed his transfer case with that stuff I think is name was rp7x.

A friend of did that but only one hole. He had it welded on the sled I would replace yours too much chance of leaks.

Not tryin' to be a smart a*$ but if you can afford a new Summit you can probably afford a NEW heat exchanger.
P.S. That sounds like something I would do.

It could be done by an experienced welder/fabricator. If the holes that go all the way through are the 5/8 ones, then 5/8 plugs would have to be cut and tapped in so they are flush with the outer skin, then welded. The 1/4 holes, no problem. It will have to be
rinsed out and free of any coolant residue and moisture. Pressure check and test for leaks before assembly. I could do it no problem, but you are too far away. Fixing it is not the issue, it's finding a competent welder. Find a fabricator that works at a race shop. JD

I'll find the magic welding sticks if you want. I'm not too far from Okauchee. We can use aluminum can bottoms to patch it up. Good thing the snow show is this weekend. We can get a primer from the sales guy again and buy more if we need them!
