Elio motors

Personally, I think this is a great idea and like the way the CEO describes the vision. So many of us drive a 5000lb vehicle with one person in it. With the MPG, safty and cost of this unit one may just have a viable alternative to the inefficient vehicle he or she drives, regardless of the current MPG's because a 4 passenger vehicle with one person in it is inefficient,,,anyway you look at it even if you can afford to pay the fuel.

Their plan is to open dealerships in top 60 markets. The plan calls for a computer kiosk where you will order your car with the assistance of a sales associate. No haggling. The car will be delivered in 24 hours. Service will be done through PEP Boys nationwide.
You can pre-reserve at their website with a deposit of $100, $250/$500/$1000. Shipments will be made to $1000 deposits first, then on down the list. They have over 33,000 deposits.

The car is being built in an old GM plant in Shreveport LA.

I don't think everyone is going to sell their current cars and buy an Elio so most will still have a capable grocery hauler

Ahhh, but that's not the point of his pitch. His pitch was very sound...we buy pickups and suvs to haul toys and kids on the weekend, the other 5 days these vehicles carry one passenger and suck up a lot of gas. Look at me, I drive a Silverado around Door County hauling myself around, and suck up a lot of gas. This car would be just fine for running around here, maybe going to Green Bay. The key to it is the $6800 price tag.

Silverado Elio
Gas Price $3.50 $3.50
MPG 14 84
Miles driven 15000 15000
Cost $3,750.00 $625.00
Savings $3,125.00
Payback 2.18 yrs

That is a sound concept, because usually we see these gas saver vehicles at $18k-$22k (Prius is $25k), and to afford them we have to sell our pickups and SUVs. For $6800 I can save $3100 a year? And keep my pickup? Wow! That is a solution!

Will be interesting to see how this does

Put some skis on the front and a track on the back and you have a pretty nice sled for $6800 + conversion expenses!

I am seriously thinking of getting one. My commute is 140 miles a day. My current car has 216k on it, and gets 25 mpg. Spending 13-20k on a newer car that gets 5-15 mpg better, or more, makes no sense. Now, 6800 bucks for a car that gets 84, 70 realistically, mpg, yea, that is more like it. I could go to Twin Lakes, and back, for 25 bucks. :)
