Escape AWD 3.0 V6 - Can I tow a four place open trailer with 3 sleds on it?

Some of you are making me nervous about the braking.....

I have a guy who will install an electric brake controller and wiring in the escape for $300

Sounds like I need to spend the $300?

X2 on the brakes, personally I wouldn't try it without em, chit I bought a new Triton 12' enclosed and insisted they had brakes, Dealer tried to talk me out of em but I said no brakes no deal. My first trailer was a 16' Floe enclosed (great 3 place trailer) and it got my arse out of some touchy jams on ice, pay the $300.00 or better yet save the cash and do it yourself trailer switch about 80 bucks simple mount, plug in and whala brake time lol

Its supposed to POUR rain in Chicago on Friday and turn to snow once we get up to Crivitz Friday night....that scared me thinking about ice/snow transition. True story --- about four years ago I was sleeping in the back of a Ford F150 Supercrew heading north. It had rained all day but was well below freezing at night and ice was about an inch thich on 90 outside of Madison (we only knew this after the fact). All of a sudden --- picture this---ford supercrew xlt with 3 guys and 3 sleds on a four place trailer loses traction on a gentle turn in the highway and started doing 360s (literally, the truck, trailer, the whole setup doing 360's down the middle of frickin I90 at 60mph) The whole setup was spinning so fast it whipped 2 of the sleds off the back of the trailer and flung 'em into the air. One cartwheeled into the ditch and the other (my brand new IQ) landed perfectly upright, cover still on, on the side of the road. After about 5 or 6 complete spins that absolutley scared the chit out of everyone, we ended up facing oncoming traffic nestled snugly against the highway divider which was covered in fluffy snow. Not a scratch on the truck, trailer, any of us, and just the damage to the sled that cartwheeled (broken trailing arm). Other than that, trooper helped us get out of there and we went straight back home white as ghosts. Not a moment anyone EVER wants to repeat.

That said, I bought the trailer brake hookup and it works like a charm with the trailer. Had 2 sleds on there today and everything seemed perfect. Trailer brakes work and Escape tows at 65 just fine.

Now, it may be a slightly different story with the 3rd sled, 2 more guys and gear. That right there will add 1100 lbs to the deal but we will take it easy and we should have smooth sailing.

Bumpy from crivitz to Florence, but overall still a lot of fun. No dirt showing yesterday but I think they have had a touch time grooming since all the snow fell at once.

Anything is possible, just because it is possible doesn't mean it is safe. There are reasons
trailers are required to have brakes for this kind of weight. Let us know which route you will
be traveling so the rest of us can stay out of your way. With any luck you will fry the
transmission in about 50 miles and we won't have to worry about it.
That's a heII of a thing to wish on someone! It can be done safely. You don't need a big azz 3/4 ton diesel to pull a trailer 80 mph. Use your head and you'll be safe!

His trailer DOES have brakes and he invested in a brake controller so they worked fine. Read the whole thread please.

FWIW we pulled my old 19' bowrider, combined boat/trailer weight around 4000 pounds, with my wife's Trailblazer with the straight 6 a few times when I already had something bigger hitched to my truck. That engine was a torqueless wonder so it spent a lot of time revving but we never had any problem with control or stopping....I realize this is surge brakes versus electric but the ratio of towed to towing weight was worse than the Escape and open trailer.

Now enclosed trailer....whole different story.......

Troll much?

I suppose you would have to read the thread to understand that I had trailer brakes and a functioning controller.

I won't be replying to this thread any more.

Many thanks to all that constructively, safely, helped me figure this one out.
