exhaust guys, need your opinions

I want to change the exhaust on my 86 W250 dodge plow truck, 360 4 barrel. Obviously because of age the exhaust is not original, has a leak and bent up muffler. I may get another year out of it but am considering replacing it. Right now is seems like the 2" single exhaust is a bit restrictive. I mean I am not looking to replace it with a performance set up but want good flow, good tone and proper back pressure. With the current location of the fuel and homemade skid plate for the tank, it is impossible to run a side of the exhaust on the drives side without going outside the frame, which looks do-able.

So, my questions is, do I buy an after market outside the frame kit? Cut the factory y pipe and avoid the gas tank bu crossing under the drive shaft and running 2 glass pack bullet type mufflers on the passenger side exiting out before the rear tire?. I kinda like the outside the frame set up but not sure about the quality of these complete exhaust systems from places like Jegs. They say they are 16 g aluminized. I am looking for options and advise from others who have experienced this similar thing.

I have 2.5" stainless piping straight back from the cats with 18" long tips at 45 deg. angles. If I had to pay for it to be done, I would do 3.5" piping straight back from the cats, and straight out the back. The 3.5" piping adds a nice deep tone, not too crackling, loud, and annoying like mine, but still gives it a nice tuned sound. It depletes the need to buy mufflers, so it saves some money there.

well I think that truck would look best with 2 tractor stacks with the rain flapper on top sticking out just behind the cab about 6 in higher than the top of the cab.just my 2 cents

If it were me I would have the exhaust discharge out at least the drive (wheel) side in front of this tire and have the exhaust tip pointed towards the tire. Setting it up this way keeps the snow and ice from building up on the tire tread and it also blows out unwanted stones. It may sound silly but this is how I set up my 78 Ford F-250 back in the day and it worked great!

Stacks are nice but you do have to remember you need a certain amount of restriction for optimal performance. I personally would not go bigger than a three inch exhaust system on that truck.

well I scratched the idea of stacks. I opted to run a full separate duel with tail pipes. Price was a factor, I hope the 16g aluminized holds for a number of years. I found a complete manifold back system 2 1/4 from Hooker. I called them up and they diredted me on line to a diagrahm of the specific system for my truck and it will work. I checked out the feed backs, most were positive. It shipped today and I'll probably have it on over the weekend. I guess I don't want a bunch of noise as I may be plowing early and late, you know, neighbors!

I bought an exhaust off the Internet by Hooker headers, everything shipping was about $330. I installed it myself and it was very easy from the E.manifold back (everything.) Sounds just like what I wanted, It's not load idling except right next to the tail pipe and than just a nice tone. On the highway she sounds good and rev'ing in neutral she is a bit loader and cackles a bit rev'ing down,
