A friend of mine also got frost bite on his face just outside the mouth-piece with the BRP mod.Never wore it again. I wear a HJC CL12 with an elec. shield and a head scarf, works great!

I would vote against the BRP Modulars for extreme cold weather. Year before last I bought a mod-1 that I love in general, but it has its issues in below zero weather.

Last year I got frostbite twice on evening runs around zero or below. This was on my cheek above the mask, not inside the mask as I've heard some other experience. You really need to cover almost all exposed skin in these situations.

Also, when it approaches this cold I find the condensation starts to build up and freeze in the vent tubes where they exit the helmet. A couple of times it got to the point of blocking air flow. I'd have to stop, take off the helmet, and try to break out all of the ice. Tough on the hands in the cold, too. Swapping a mask as someone above noted might help, but I found the ice would block up the port in the helmet shell too and that part was really hard to clear and a new mask wouldn't help. A buddy who has the mod-2 experienced less of this than I did, so the mod-2 may be improved over the mod-1, but he still had some issues.

I've had enough issues that I'm thinking about getting a different helmet to wear below about 5 degrees, so I'm interested to see all the responses you get.

Don't get me wrong. Above 5 degrees I really like the mod helmet. Very comfortable. Never fogs the helmet lens or my glasses. Flipping up the visor alone or the full face is easy to do with gloves on. Ventilation adjusts well, etc.

Good luck. Wish I could do the Alaska trip.

I wear a BRP modular standard style and it is very warm would not wear anything else for a long trip like that.

yea i have never got forst bit with mine. in the last 2 years or so. i and i did all night time ridding. cause of my job hours. i have a low style windshild. i almost sweat every time i go out if i do any thing close to agressive ridding. and until last year i decided to acutly buy them abosrbent filters. they help with the freesing up of the holes. thats the only proble i have is the holes freeze up on me. but a screw driver works to clean them out. then good for anothre coulple of hours.

Been really happy with my BRP I have the old one and the new one. I have never had a problem but if I was riding to Alaska I would check to see what they use there and go with that. I also wish I had the time and the means. Good Luck !!!

I know the electric shield is a concern, but I have about 15,000 miles on a single electric shield. I have had to replace the cord once. I actually carry an extra cord now, just in case. I have been running a Cat TXI helmet. I can tell you that freezing my melon is not of primary concern in cold weather. The protection from the sled itself is a huge factor BTW.

Look at photos of the Iron Dog. Those guys use some unigue helmets. They all run tall windshields and guantlets. Tell your friends to test some various configurations before taking off on this trip. Try riding a couple hundred miles at 30 below. You will find ice in places you would never imagine.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here between the BRP Modular and the BRP Bv2S helmet. My post above is referable to the Bv2S which I have, and though I agree that a bit of ice can build up on the exhaust ports, never had it occlude the exhaust personally. I have never had an air leak, and stay very warm and fog clear in mine.

I say call Sara Palin's Hubby and ask him, doesn't he race cross country. I'm sure everyone has had bad experiences with many types of helmets and none are full proof. As previously mentioned I love my Bv2S though some have had bad experiences. I have never had any air leak issues, completely clogged air vents (yes ice does form though), and never had frost bite and have been in -20 before.

I heard BRP has implemented a new I.Q. test prior to the acquisition of the BVS2 helmets. (Pun intended)
Sell roughly 70+ per season; always get 2 back with "consumer" problems.
For a full face helmet I would ride with nothing less than the BVS2, especially if you wear glasses like I do.

Geezzzz Marty nobody said BRP helmets are bad. I like mine just a bit cold & air leakey in extreme cold temps but was great improvement over prior helmets. If something better for Alaska trip then the poster wants to hear about it. I still think it is what you wear to keep face & head warm. My mask & pipes have & do freeze up when about -15F but I was at the end of 250-300 mile day & too tired to deal with icing problem so just rode the last 15 miles with out mask which on that day was a frozen solid block of ice after I stopped & gassed up. Since then I carry a spare mask good to go & pop in.

Brad,

Good point. I also think there is some confusion between the Modular and the new Modular 2. I have both and the Modular 2 is superior to the original Modular.....the minor air leaks in the original Modular have been fixed.

i have the modular and the modular 2. they freeze up. but a screw driver dose wounders. the air leaks are fixable just gota know what you are doing. and how to fix it. it aint that hard. i have both of them and they dont leak air any more. just have to move the seal around. then go and test it. the move it around little more. just make sure its warm when you move it around.

A friend of mine has raced in the Iron Dog in Alaska. He wears an open face SHOI with Smith goggles and moto cross mask that snaps to the goggles. Then he either uses medical foam tape or duck tape on your temples and forhead.

Dont forget that on a trip that long you may want to take a few helmet parts with you or take a helmet brand that most dealers have in inventory. The unforseen can happen and leave you stuck without replacement parts available! I will also second the tall windshield. Keep the wind off of you and you should be warm!!!
