I see lot's of comments like "I don't do bookface". I will admit that I am not a very "social" guy when it comes to social media as evidenced by the few posts that I make on here. I am more of a lurker. I have been on Facebook since 2012 and have only "friended" one person, my son, who can message me if desired but never does. Nobody else can. My profile is hidden so none of my info gets shared. I signed up so I could follow my club's page but now follow a few more. It seems many traditional web pages have moved content there so the info has been great, especially Marketplace. I will never quit this site but why are so many people reluctant to join Facebook?

Because I don't care to be spied on by Zuckerberg or anyone else.

Ever read or listen to the news about consumer trends? Where does that data come from? My day isn't full of filling out surveys, is yours?

I've watched people read FB & I can't even figure out where or what is being said. And let's not forget all the notifications you will be swamped with.

Too bad so many (typically small businesses) rely on FB instead of having a website. Non FB people can only read hours & phone #. I guess they don't want my business.

That's not correct. I don't have facebook and get still read businesses pages. It changed recently and you can only read the last 2-3 post (and the comments) but its still better then nothing for staying up to date on some of the clubs activities.

Technically I have FB, but I use a fake name my kid set up for me so I can look on marketplace for stuff that is for sale

i don’t have FB friends and don’t plan too. He set it up after the 20th time of me asking to use his phone to look at stuff

It seems to depend on the site. Some I can scroll a bit. Others not at all.

How do you set up a fake name?

I set up a fake name with a gmail with the same fake name, and only use facebook in firefox container which supposedly keeps its tentacles out of it. I don't like the data collection. Also, I can ask a question on here or a couple other good forums and get good info. On Facebook you have to weed out the people that know nothing but are offering advice. But all the trail info is now on fb so it's hard to avoid.

In my opinion, the concept of FB, as originally envisioned, has largely gone away. Most of the people I know that are friends in real life or just on FB rarely post or share anything anymore or have closed their accounts outright. The standard feed is now mostly an avalanche of ads, promotions, misinformation, or outright scams. If you even stop scrolling accidentally, the algorithms will subsequently bombard you with similar subject posts.

I will admit, Marketplace is pretty useful and I’ve bought and sold things there. What really keeps me visiting regularly are the brand and even model-specific vintage sled groups. They are very aggressively policed and kept on subject. You see a lot of cool sleds and the members have helped me a lot with parts needs and questions (and I’ve had some dumb ones).

I'm mainly on FB as I am the administrator of Trails North ATV club(our website gets no action) and also administrator of my Rescue-United Doberman Rescue and Canine Castaways of MN.. I creep a lot of people's page when they want to adopt, it works great for that!!!

My page would be shut down if it was not for Marketplace. I would love for Craigslist or another site to come back and be the main site for buying and selling. I despise the fact that you cannot set your feed to latest post and the nonstop suggested for you posts. And no offense to the older crowd that seems to be using FB more now, but many of you do not know how to handle social media. I have a friend that is close to disowning his mom over it :ROFLMAO:

I belong to the older crowd. I get zero suggestions or ads. Just the content that I clicked on (using a Windows PC). I think it may be that I haven't provided any info that would be used to profile me. Or maybe my adblocker is taking care of things. I also never got any of the ads that many on JohnDee were experiencing a while back.

The ads still happen. I have add blocker too

I use it all the time for snowmobile and side by side related activities escpecially following snowmobile clubs. Marketplace is also a great tool to utilize.

More like “don’t want to handle social media”. That’s where I think the younger peeps misinterpretation of the older peeps, big difference in don’t know how to handle vs don’t want to handle. I think it’s bad for young kids and developing minds. One thing I don’t care about is the court of public opinion or those who have keyboard courage. too Many people caring about likes or views and all that garbage. I’m sure some need it but it really has messed with the social aspect of life, at least the kind that seems meaningful to me. And it sometimes has me debating all online things as well as cell phones.
I’ve canceled cable, i literally look at 2 websites, this one and a bbq one, is that worth $100/ month idk,, the sounds of nature are much better than ringtones.

im also the one who hated/hates video games. In the 80’s when that crap was coming out I never did that stuff, never have ever. retirement Isn’t too far off, then time to unplug.

and if the world is passing me by that’s ok I like the older way things were anyway.

hopefully the young peeps and business owners can leverage the power of SM to make them some money and provide benefit to the world and themselves.

thinking about it I’m sure my parents thought the crap I did wasn’t friendly to the old ways either they pro thought I was missing the boat and not appreciating thingsnthey held as important idk

to each their own, in my mind FB provides classified ads that were in a newspaper, but now I see them on my iPad.

if I seem grumpy that’s because I shoveled an hour yesterday and today and I need a new hip!,

sucks to get old, hip is shot, live on ibuprofen and cortisone , never needed that when I was younger 🙁

Get that hip replaced Chris, you'll feel like a younger man again (but I can't guarantee you won't still be grumpy).

One thing I forgot to mention that is kind of interesting on FB is the "Memories" feature that will pop up one of your posts from the past. I see these sometimes and I think "holy crap, has it really been 10 years since this photo was taken". Time sure seems to get away from you.
